Google Pixel 8 / Android 14: Distorted Sound

I just received the brand-new Google Pixel 8 and realized that all Unity sounds are terribly distorted. Other apps (like Spotify) just work fine.

Only the internal speaker is affected, if I connect the device to an external Bluetooth speaker, the sound is fine. I cross-tested with two other devices (Samsung S10 5G and Xiami Mi 9 Pro), they don’t show this issue either.

Any idea what might cause this effect?

The problem could be resolved by lowering the DSP audio buffer size:

However, I am not sure this is a good solution, since the buffer has to be quite small (64). Even 128 does not work. Fun fact: usually, sound distorts if an audio buffer is too small, at least in digital audio workstations (DAWs). Why it is the opposite for Unity is a miracle to me.

I’m also unsure if this has a negative impact on other devices.

“Oh, that’s a bummer. It might be a Unity thing on the Pixel 8. Have you hit up Unity support yet? They might have some tricks up their sleeves. If not, maybe bug Google for a software update.
My Samsung S22 didn’t pull this stunt, so fingers crossed for a quick fix on your end!”
