I don’t want to hijack your thread or excitement, but I thought I’d post our recent experience with being featured.
Sheepstacker is actually in the “What’s Hot” section of “Games” in iTunes (meaning, we’re not actually featured on the iPhone’s App Store app). It’s only really been there for about a day, but in that day we experienced a 436% increase in sales. So even a little bit of visibility goes a long way in the App Store. I’ll update this post once we get the numbers from Wednesday.
@JTBentley: Like you, we didn’t get any e-mail or message that we were going to be featured. In fact, we probably wouldn’t have noticed if it weren’t for another developer alerting us to it. Also, congrats on getting featured! If you’re like us, you probably feel like you just won the lottery, heh.
Our experience has been that features in the games section have a marginal effect on sales. What you really want is one of the coveted main app store ‘New and Noteworthy’ or ‘What’s Hot’. These can make a HUGE difference, one of the key factors being that these sections are viewable on the in-phone App Store when you press ‘Featured>New’ and ‘Featured>What’s Hot’.
Still, it is definitely a stepping stone, and hopefully someone at Apple will elevate your app to the main store what’s new!
My experience with being featured in games was a 200% increase in sales, not marginal at all. Although being featured on the main page a week later for staff favorites was a further 300% increase over that. As far as I know, I was never featured on the in-phone app store, but with numbers like that, I didn’t complain…
Well, it’s Thursday. We’re still in the Games “What’s Hot” section, and our sales for Wednesday were a little higher than even the day before. So all in all, a good week for us.
Yeah, so, RoboRiot (still in new/noteworthy) is sitting happily, its not doing enough to hit any lists though, so its not going to get critical momentum.
However, our AAA Gunclub is in all top 50 charts worldwide and is (presently #37)… And our latest, Desert Eagle 3D is in many top 100 lists (not the us yet) on its second day.
These are just the little apps we’re amusing ourselves with until our big app is finished (should be later next month).
So, realistically, the feature hasn’t made much of a difference. Its good for that particular product, though
I noticed there are a couple Unity games featured in the US App Store front page this week:
The Mechtley brother’s Touch KO has got a nice feature button (currently at US #169)
h.genade’s circuit_strike.one is in the “What’s Hot” section (currently not in US Top 1000)
As far as I know neither have been in the Top 100 yet (both deserve to be!), so keep a look out to see if these front page features help them up the charts. Also, if you haven’t bought them yet, you definitely should as they are both fine examples of what can be done with Unity!
Also worth noting is that both games are published by Chillingo, which suggests they have some influence on getting an app featured on the front page…
I don’t think size makes as big a difference as everyone thinks - being over 10MB doesn’t seem to have hurt Zombieville’s sales.
If you are over 10mb you’ll need a lot of help getting into the top 10.
I had a handful of people that tried to download my game over regular cellular connection and had to go home on their computers to do it.
Especially if you get featured you will block out a huge amount of downloads from the featured list on the phone due to the 10mb restriction. Not everyone is on wifi/iTunes.
With more games being on the App store it is harder than before to get all the attention even when you are featured.
It really doesn’t matter that much. When Apple had the list of the top selling games a while back, at least half were over 10MB. Most of the time when I look at the top 10, around half are over 10MB. I’ve had plenty of copies sold, and not once have I ever heard any complaints about being over 10MB…it’s never even been mentioned, and I never see it come up in discussions of other games, either. Endless complaints about price, quality, etc. etc., yes…size, no.
