Graphic design heavy style like Kentucky Route Zero?

I’m asking this primarily as an artist who basically has very little what he’s doing when it comes to programming shaders, but wants to learn.

First off, if you haven’t played Kentucky Route Zero (http://kentuckyroutezero.com), I highly recommend you drop everything and do it right now. Or at least watch the demo video. It’s friggin Another World/Flashback modern gorgeousness.

Secondly, any insight on how they are achieving this amazing graphic style? According to (http://unity3d.com/gallery/made-with-unity/profiles/profile#cardboardcomputer-kentuckyroutezero) they rely heavily on vertex color painting, but they also have a lot of full screen gradients and some real time lighting thrown in.

With the lighting, they’re simply using the attenuation value of the light. Bit more info here;

That was a pretty good read. Thanks Farfarer!
