Grey Screen After Start up

Starting yesterday, Unity’s load time drastically extended. Prior to yesterday, I would open the Hub, select a project and it would load in a few minutes, if that. This morning it takes 15+ minutes. Once it’s finished loading, the project opens to a grey screen, as seen below, where I can’t work on the project.

I’ve tried opening a different project and starting a new project to make sure that it wasn’t that particular file. Unfortunately, both attempts resulted in the same long load time and grey screen afterwards.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Your image is far too small, what version of Unity is that?

Try this:

  • go to Window/Layouts/Reset Factory settings,
  • if it’s not enough delete the Unity folder in “C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming”,
  • in last resort deinstall Unity, make sure the folder that contained it has been completely deleted and reinstall it.

Thanks so much for your reply, APSchmidt. Apologies for the small image. Unity version 2019.3.0a5

Resetting the Layout to factory settings did cause a change although it did not resolve the problem. I’ve included a larger screenshot showing the result.

I’m new to Unity and taking a course, thanks for your patience. Before I remove and reinstall Unity, is there a best practice for backing up projects? If I lose them, it won’t be the end of the world. May even be an opportunity to review some materials but I’d prefer not to start over.

Last questions, should I consider another version of Unity and, if so, which one? In the course I’m taking I’ve found several bugs in my current version that the instructor does not experience with an older version.

Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it!

The letter “a” in the name 2019.3.0a5 stands for alpha. You shouldn’t use an alpha or even beta version of the editor unless you really want to test it.

You should deinstall 2019.3.0a5 and install any recent version of the editor that has an “f” in their name, “f” standing for final.

If you’re new to Unity, I suggest you use Unity 2018.4 LTS, which is considered stable:
https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive

Using the LTS releases allows you to concentrate on learning Unity, because you don’t have to deal with so many problems. There are also more Unity tutorials out there for “older” versions too.

Unity 2019.3 is an alpha release at the moment and is the most unstable Unity version you can think of. Not so great for learning purposes.

@ @Peter77 Thank you both so much for the instructions and quick replies. This was a huge help!

In case anyone else encounters this same issue, I wanted to comeback and say, for me, the issue was caused due to my VPN. I’m not sure how the two were related, but if I turn my VPN off, Unity loads projects without issue. If my VPN is on, Unity will freeze after attempting to open old projects. Also, if I turn my VPN on while Unity is in the middle of loading, it’s the same result.

This occurred while using Unity 2019.3 Alpha and also with Unity 2018.4.3f1

I reported a bug with Unity last week and just updated it with this information. Hopefully, they’ll work something out as I’m sure others will encounter this in the future.

Did you have a look at the reply you received from QA on the 12th?

Thank you I tried other things but this worked the best thank you
