GUI Text and create a line break by holding Alt

In the manual you can read this for line breaks in a GUI Text:

I hold ALT, press return, enter my second line. And the result still gets displayed as one line.

Is the manual outdated? Is the method another one now? Does it need a special keyboard layout (mine is german)? Or is it simply broken?

I think there are issues with that working consistently on Windows, but it works fine on OS X so that is the correct method.
