Handling multiple items in the game and setting them correctly in the player's hand

Hi, just working on a multiplayer game similar to minecraft. So I have quite a few items in the game, and thus I need to somehow make each item fit properly in my hand, and since I have a rig player with fingers as well I need the fingers to fit the items properly as well. The only solution I have come up with so far is to make idle, walking and running animations for each item, but that seems rather pointless when there Will be maybe hundreds of items in the game.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Try IK:

An easy workaround is create a 1 frame pose animation for holding each object and then add the idle/walk/run noise procedurally. Lots of games use this as a workaround, even third person. Uncharted had 1 frame poses for all the different idle types and just added an additive “idle” animation playing back on top (I think they actually had multiple additive idle animations that were of different length and layered them so there would be no way the character would repeat idle anims): https://gdcvault.com/play/1012300/Animation-and-Player-Control-in
