I’m looking to get a new development system. I’ve been using mac for years but I’m open to getting a Windows-based system, especially since macs don’t appear to support screen refresh rates beyond 60Hz (?).
Pros / cons of mac versus Windows for Unity dev?
Also, I’d like to be able to capture quality video of game play. The software solutions I’ve tried, at least on my mac, don’t really cut it (very poor frame rates in the resulting video). Is a hardware device the way to go on this? Again, any suggestions?
Many thanks.
You can use the unity recorder to record video from inside the editor.
If you buy a PC with a Nvidia GPU it comes with a function called shadow play that lets you record your gameplay at full resolution and framerate directly to H264 without much performance impact.
Another good and free tools is OBS , intended for streaming but you can just record a application or your screen.
Pro windows would be that you get a wider list of options for hardware. (mac only come with amd GPU’s)
It’s a question for comfort and tools you use.
Do you plan on building for ios?
With Apple announcing they are in the process of replacing x86 with their own CPU architecture, I’d take extra consideration before buying a new x86 Mac until the dust settles.
Just an update…
Settled on a mid-range Windows PC with a Nvidia card. Night and day compared to the (admittedly old) iMac. Compile/run is almost instantaneous. And OBS works very well on the new system. Thank you for the tip.
