Has anyone read this book about Unity?

[Edited Post: Sue Blackman has started a thread about her book in the Teaching section of this forum. Go there for current information relating to her book.]

Got it yesterday, big book 1000 pages. It appears to cover a lot of what is in other books out on unity but through creating an adventure style game. One big let down is the source code and files that are needed to make the game are not yet on the Apress site. I emailed Apress about that and they quickly responded saying they are trying to get the resources up as soon as possible. I couldn’t locate her site as the link goes to big daddy set sales.

Not had time to give any real opinion on i yet.

I just got my copy today and can confirm that there’s no source code or a link to Sue’s website anywhere. Kind of disappointed with the book in general. Like disaldo said, it’s mostly the same stuff all the other Unity books cover. Nothing real innovative or different here. I was hoping that the scripting would be done in C#, since all other books cover JavaScript, but no luck. Still, it’s a good resource for a beginner. I just hope they come out with the assets soon (the book has been out since May 25th…).

Cheers,
Chris

Yeh it arrived the other day. Huge book, big shame that the companion e-book isnt available for the launch considering its written twice on the book itself and on the publication web page. Apress support is useless. I can honestly say that I am tempted to sell the book on if they don’t reply to my ticket’s asap.

1000 pages sounded like a lot of information at a relatively cheap price. Is it really that much of a letdown? Shame you can’t take a sneak peak on Amazon…

The reason the book is so long is because there’s a lot of wasted space. Most pages only contain a small, low quality black and white photo and then a paragraph of text or a few lines of code. There are some pages that are almost entirely wasted with a narrow (though tall), blurry image and then nothing else (besides a caption). There are plenty of small typos and gramatical errors, too. It feels like the book was rushed into production, honestly.

I’ve had the same disappointing experience - this book was delayed and delayed and delayed - originally I think it was going to include info on iOs but got put back to include the changes in unity with android etc as far as I can see there is no ref to these at all now , this is a huge omission surely with those market places expanding at such a rate -

was the history of gaming needed?

To have to type in code in this day and age when may want to load and look what has been built is ridiculous - really disappointing - hopefully this would be addressed by the publishers

A huge disappointment I have to say -

I’m in the same boat at the moment. I’ve also emailed Apress but no reply yet. I was really enjoying the book and was about 180 pages through it when I suddenly came to a part which I needed some of their assets. Bit of a shame that Apress wasn’t prepared for the release of the book.

On another note that someone mentioned about the scripts being in Javascript, if anyone wants a hand translating them to C# i’ll help out, just drop me a PM.

Not to dis book authors or anything but I think video tutorials are the way to go for something as visual as Unity.
(Unless of course it gets into very advanced topics that are more theory related)

I bought the book too. I like the featured material especially stuff like managing states. I’m an artist and 3D graphics are easy for me. So getting a rundown on application architecture is very cool for me.

Nevertheless, I did several searches for Sue Blackman, and nothing comes up except for what is related to the book. For someone with her background, you would think she would have tons of hits. I’m beginning to think she is fictional. Lol!!!

I sent an email to Peter Laliberte, one of the co-authors. I’ll post if I hear from him.

I could live without the code, if its correctly laid out in the book. But we need the assets to configure this stuff. Right!?

Hi guys,

Yes, I really do exist!

A week ago I opened a thread for the book on the Teaching forum, http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/93775-Beginning-3D-Game-Development-with-Unity, and also the Showcase forum,http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/93795-My-Unity-book-project!. Silly me- never thought to look in the gossip forum. My apologies. Keep an eye on the Teaching forum one- that’s where I will be answering questions.

As I said in the other threads, last week the publisher told me they’d try to have the assets up last Friday. The downloads include start and finish Unity project files for most of the chapters as well as the straight art assets and code.

I’ll post as soon as I hear anything more!

Hi all,

I got a reply from the publisher- the assets will go up on Thursday.
If there are any more delays, we will go to plan B where I will at least make sure the art assets are available.

Also got my website up - don’t get excited, it’s pretty simple at the moment. Eventually I hope to make bonus assets and scripts available both there and on the book’s thread on the Teaching forum.

Zoneman- A lot of the work I do cannot be shown (serious games sort of stuff, both military and industry) so I tend to keep a low profile by nature. I have been a contributor to several 3DS Max books, both artwork, exercises and tutorials, and have written for the Siggraph publication, but self-promotion is not high on my todo list, so I sometimes miss stuff.

Azel- Yes, I’m keeping an on-going list of typos, fixes, and the like. The post-publish fixes doc is included in the download, but I will probably post it on the book’s thread in the Teaching forum so I can make sure it is always up to date. Please be sure to post there if you have any questions or problems.

joemoretti- Typing! couldn’t agree with you more- cut and paste is the only way to go. You should be able to download the scripts by chapter when the assets are up on the Apress website.

disaldo- Yes, most of the books out right now cover a lot of the same material. If you think about it, when most of us started writing our books, the only book out was Will Goldstone’s book. Publishers were wary about risking a book (typically 6-12 month process) on a relatively new game engine (and more than likely, a first time author), let alone a book for ‘advanced’ topics. By the time you’ve covered the basics in enough detail for a beginner to follow, there’s only so much room left for the good stuff. And that’s the next question the publisher will ask, “how is your book different from the rest?” So we all try to offer something different while still remaining general enough to appeal to more than a few people. I expect we will see more advanced books now that the Unity user base continued to increase.

Thanks for your patience- I’ll let you all know as soon as the assets have gone live.

Sue

Kudos on the book! As an educator involved with serious games (military and academia), the book is laid out well from a pedagogical standpoint. The book is a nice fit with Jesse Schell’s “The Art of Game Design” as one moves from design to development. I’ve now made it part of our professional development program.

Looking forward to the assets posting.

News flash!

The assets and e-book are now up on the Apress website, Beginning 3D Game Development with Unity: All-in-one, multi-platform game development | SpringerLink

The download is 3.2 GB and includes art assets, finished code by chapter, Unity projects start and finish per chapter, and the post-publish doc file.

Be sure to visit the book’s thread on the Teaching forum if you have an questions, or just want to chat- http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/937...ent-with-Unity

Excellent!

Thank you for posting those links.

I also have a copy of the book, haven’t read too far into it yet as i was waiting for the source code to be released.

I too was a little disapointed to see that all the scripting is in Java, I was hoping for some C#, (but in any case, there’s a book coming out in Dec that i’ve ordered from that focuses entirely on using C# in unity :p)

Now, to download that source code…clicks links

EDIT

[edit removed] nevermind, the download link is there now :stuck_out_tongue: it wasn’t when i last checked an hour ago

So, now with the assets available, I should pick up a copy at Amazon. Thanks for keeping us updated, Sue!

@ Sue, Thanks posting back to us. It really helps to hear from you. I’ll follow you on your other threads. …GREAT book!!! Good luck with your endeavors.

Tough crowd, LOL! hang in there Sue~
