hey ive finaly got the terrain editor down now im having trouble doing 2 things
1.)the terrain assets you get from the asset store for free ive downloaded and tried to install them. But i cant seem to find them when i want to start puting them on my terrain
2.) what im trying to do is make an rpg game not mmo just a straight up rpg single player game. i’m trying to build a starter island where the player would basicaly have an ingame tutorial and start the story of the game. i cant seem to find a way to flood the terrain basicaly creating the island
It’s a little tricky trying to work out what you’re after, but I’ll give it a shot.

Once you’ve downloaded the assets they’ll be in the form of a Unity Package. This will be dumped on your computer wherever you specified, or left in your downloads folder, depending on things like your browser and settings. Either way, just find the package so you know where it is, open your Unity project and on the top bar click ‘Assets’ → ‘Import Package’. Find you package, select all the assets from it you’d like to import (all are selected by default), and go. Simple as that. If whatever you’ve downloaded isn’t in a Unity Package and is just a pile of assets on their own, then simply find your projects folder (by default it’s in My Documents somewhere) and stick them in the Assets folder. Open your project in Unity and it’ll sort out the rest automatically.

Flooding the terrain isn’t done using the terrain system as such, instead you create a plane object, spread it out across your map, stick it to whatever height you like and put a water texture and shader on it. Alternatively just drag one of the default water assets onto your project and tweak it however you like.
Hope that helps, best of luck with the game!
ok thanx ive finaly got the asset part down also thanx to your post wolfie as fer the water ill start messing with it here in a bit thanx fer the help guys i appreciate it
ok ive got almost everything down for doing terrains but the water. So let me get this strait if i create lets say a cube and then add a water texture to it. Then stretch it out and place it where i want the water and just adjust the height to it. Then ill have my water is this correct
ok sorry i found the plane part you were talking about but now im having trouble stretching it i have it set to the height i want i just cant figure out how to strech the plane
ok how do you adjust the plane to center over your terrain. Or do you just spred the plane to a larger size then your terrain
You can basically do all of this by adjusting the size and position values in the inspector pane. If your terrain is 1000x1000 then just set the water’s scale to at least 1000 by 1000 (probably larger so as for it to meet the horizon better). If you’re creating a pond then it can be pretty small though of course. If your terrain is at position 0, 0, 0 (measured from its corner) then change the water’s position value to 0, 0, 0 and it’ll line up. Personally I prefer to set my terrain at a half of it’s overall size, so if the terrain is 1000 by 1000, then I’ll bung it at 500, 0, 500 (y value indicates height, so it can stay at 0). This way 0, 0, 0 is right in the middle, which makes it easier to place things when starting out. There’s no definitive way of doing it though, as it’s all just relative anyway, so do what you think’s best.
Might I suggest you have a look at the Unity manual and documentation.
There’s a lot of good information there for starting out.
Also there are a lot of decent video tutorials out there which can stand you in good stead. Just stick Unity Beginners Tutorial or something into Youtube or Google Videos. For a good overview try out the Tornado Twins’ tutorial.
On that note, Unity has created some good tutorial projects, complete with assets. Run through those and you’ll have the idea in no time!

yep ive found em and been reading and watching em the only real big thing im anoyed with at the moment it seems that unity is a lil buggy every time i go to set up a texture or lay a tree or grass when i click on the terrain it sometimes wont set the asset or paint the terrain so im figureing its just some small stupid bug
Possibly, but there are other factors than bugs which could potentially be influencing this sort of stuff. It’s sometimes hard to say if it’s the engine’s fault or your own (or your computer’s). Still, I remember in the previous version there were still a few weird things, such as Unity crashing every time you tried to paint trees. There was a workaround though, so it was never a big problem.
