I want to create a written milestone of my progress. This being my first.
After several months of debate, research and procrastinating I decided to use Unity (rather than UE4), mainly due to the large community it has, as I know I will need a lot of help.
The game will be an RTS, single or MP. I want it to work on Linux too, although it’s too soon to even think about that. No idea what it means to code a game on multiple OSes. I plan on publishing it and hopefully there will be a community of sorts that will enjoy the game as much as I plan on enjoying it. I want it to have a similar art theme as HOTS (although the gameplay will be very different).
The game will revolve around players using NPCs. Players will use these NPCs to grow, battle each other and eventually win. This concept will help me because from what I have read, it is very difficult to make an RTS with multiple units on the map. This way, a player shouldn’t have more than 50 units and a couple of buildings.
Given the lack of quality RTS guides and tutorials (it’s 2017 people!), I have decided to use this course https://www.udemy.com/create-your-first-rpg-and-fps-multiplayer-game-in-unity/ to help me build a top down game, gain some basic understanding of unity and thus help me eventually build my own game. In addition, I plan to use several snippets of other people’s videos and tutorials to help build whatever my project need. Who knows, maybe one day I can release a complete RTS guide for others to benefit from as I have benefited from these online resources.
Thank you for reading this. If you have any tips to share please do! If I survive, I plan on posting updates.
Also, thank you all again for all the work you do, whether its browsing the forums, helping others or making cool games. It is a blessing to live in a world were such things are possible ![]()
