It looks like I’ll be using Unity for a while, so I’d like to take the time to introduce myself here.
I used to make half-assed games in Flash AS3. I’m just finishing up Full Sail’s Computer Animation Bachelor’s Degree, and I want to make better, whole-assed games in Unity.
I would like to show you some of my work, but my latest plan for world domination is to make NSFW games for Patreon, so I do not have anything that isn’t NSFW and I do not wish to offend anyone right away. I didn’t see any rule against NSFW content in the rules, but obviously this is always a matter that should be handled delicately.
I had been planning to keep making games in Flash, using prerendered 3D movies and sprite-sheets, but I have FlashCS4, and it constantly crashes whenever I use large graphic files. With 3D prerenders, this has gotten to the point where working with it is impossible. Rather than pay for an updated version of Flash I decided it would be best to switch to the real 3D engine of Unity. Unfortunately, there are some very fundamental differences between Unity’s 3D engine and my old Flash blit engine, so I feel like I’m starting from scratch.
As a SuperVillain, I do not shy away from the challenge of programming, but as an artist, I often feel like programming is not the best use of my time. So I plan to learn Unity, but I’d be interested in teaming up with any programmers who are interested.
We typically don’t allow NSFW content in the forums, you can post a link to an external portfolio, just make sure to indicate that the link will be NSFW. As for looking for help, you can post in collaboration forums, making sure to read the guidelines for posting there.
Thanks for the advice about the collaboration forum. For now, I am still finishing up my final 3D animation class, and I want to practice Unity on my own a little bit anyways, so I will hold off on making a formal collaboration request for now.
Should we even be allowing links of this nature? I see it directed to newgrounds with various seedy images, sex ads, penetration gifs and more. This is very, very far from portfolio material. It is a sordid sex fantasy.
Please don’t bother posting.
If you want to collaborate you’ll have to ask people to contact you for further details rather than share those links or images. You’re still welcome to develop on the forum and discuss issues of a technical nature though.
Zombie will have the last word on what you can or can’t do as first mod to respond, so I’m just saying my bit.
Do you know, I forgot that NewGrounds added adult ads. I have ads disabled on my account.
I can remove the link if you are finding it offensive. My wish is to get to know and comply with the standard practices of the Unity Forums. If you enjoy the stuff I make, I want to share it, but I don’t want to force it upon anyone if it makes them feel uncomfortable.
I think hiding NSFW material behind a link or spoiler with a clear message about the nature of the content would suffice.
Personally, I don’t think contents dealing with nudity or even sexual intercourse would make more adverse effects on children than those dealing with killing people, which unfortunately consist the majority of video games today.
However, I don’t want to force my own view on this matter to others, nor being judged by them. So, it seems to be a reasonable compromise to me to allow posting links to such explicit materials while requiring them to be preceded by a clear warning message.
Of course, underage people can ignore such a warning if they choose to. But if they are so determined to see explicit materials, I don’t think they would regard this forum as their primary source, when they can just type ‘porn’ on Google and gets tons of results.
Regardless of my opinions on the matter, I’ll point out that we already have a quite well-known member here who links (in their signature) to NSFW content.
Granted they link to their own website, which is just the game and not a bunch of ads. But it’s still explicit content.
Edit: I take that back. I know I’ve seen them post links very rarely, but they don’t have one in their sig. Disregard…
Sorry, to clarify, I meant that if you needed to post a link for collaboration or as related to a specific post, that is how you would do it. Not meant as an ok to post here. General discussion is “general”. Self promotion here is discouraged in this forum. As is NSFW content, generally speaking we try to keep things family friendly.
Yeah it’s not about what individuals believe if it harms kids or not. That’s utterly irrelevant. Forums are for development and we try to go with common sense majority rules, that is, the majority are going to be pretty pissed off at those links…
I would prefer if people NSFW-linked to work on their own websites so the clicking doesn’t go somewhere really dark, starting from Unity forums.
Noted. That does seem like the best way to handle it.
And I apologize, again, I had forgotten that NewGrounds started doing that. When I started at NG, there was less aggressive advertising and no adult advertising at all. When NG started having income problems and advertising, I became a supporter, which disables advertising, so when I go to NG, I’m not exposed to these things. That’s an embarrassing “Oh, right” moment.
In the interest of getting to know the Unity Forums, are there really a lot of minors that use this site? I was assuming that a programming website would be mostly adults.
Starting game development in your early teens is more common than you’d think. From time to time we have people mention their age, but it isn’t that common to tell everyone that you’re a kid on the Internet because you won’t always receive fair treatment if you do. I’ve yet to see any of them treated badly here, but I have seen it elsewhere.
Just to add/note - NG only advertises NSFW adverts on NSFW hosted content. They do not advertise that content on other content that is ‘rated’ for everyone or teens.
When submitting to NG - the developer has guidelines to set the rating accurately of there game and if found to be incorrect (marking a mature title as teen or everyone) NG will pull the content from the site.
Um…does that really make a difference? NSFW == Not Suitable For Work. It’s not typically stuff an adult developer at work looking at development stuff on their development platform forum is going to want on their monitor.
Well, for me, making NSFW content is work, and you shouldn’t really be looking at pictures or playing games at all while you’re at work, even if they’re not NSFW, so the whole thing is not to be taken literally. It’s more of a euphemism to warn people about what they are about to see. If I simply said what it is, you might get in trouble for having those words on your computer screen, even if you didn’t click the link. And I don’t want to get you in trouble. I want you to be happy.
So anyways, not a lot of NSFW game developers around here, I guess? I’ve been wondering if/when the people who did that kind of thing in Flash would switch to doing that kind of thing in Unity. I’m still a little grumpy about learning it all over again, but I’ve got to admit, Unity + Blender really gives a lot more power to the independent developer than Flash did, and at zero cost.
