Hello people. This is my introduction

Hello, as you can probably tell from the title I’m new here and I would simply like to introduce myself to the community and get to know what some of the community is like. I’ve been loosely following some unity projects on and off over the year and recently got interested in Unity itself. So naturally I go and download it and start messing about with the features, imported some of my models and followed some tutorials to get a simple first person controller set up and I must say I’m enjoying unity and will probably be around for a long time. Although I have previous experience in modeling and animation I have almost none in programming so I will be around here asking plenty of questions.

I look forward to getting to know some of you and hopefully the more experienced people don’t get too annoyed with probably simple question I’ll end up asking  That being said I wish all of you a good night.

Welcome!

You will learn quickly that the vast majority of users here are (usually) very competent and eager to help. And as someone with more knowledge in modelling than in programming myself, I’m very interested to see your work. You might want to check out the Small Artworks thread in the WIP forum.

Now, get started and have fun!

Thank you for your reply. The response makes me feel a little better about deciding to learn on unity. As you had little knowledge of programming when starting Unity how did you adapt?

Well I did have some Javascript classes in highschool, so I knew what variables and if statements and arrays were. I chose Unity in big part because it allowed me to program in Java. and once I remembered the syntax and how classes work, it was no problem to script timers, calculators and small stuff like that. Then I realized I can use any class Unity offers and simply use gameobjects in variables, then modify those variables. Realizing that felt very powerful indeed, and the scriptreference proved an invaluable asset. You can look up any component in Unity and see what functions exactly you can call on them and how to do so. If you have at least some basic knowledge of programming, variables, loops, you’ll be creating fun little games very quickly.

Welcome, here is some general advice:

When you do post questions about something, try to get it in the correct sub forum, scripting questions in the scripting forum, collaboration pitches in the collab forum etc.

Once you get rolling with unity and you can start to make a variety of games, it’s common for one to feel like now they are a CEO and they are going to make the most awesome MMO in three months and everyone will just help them do it. Don’t fall into that trap. Stay modest, take it slow and steady.

Having said that, always be welcome to constructive criticisms of your ideas. It may be your idea for a game, your script or something else. There is a wealth of knowledge on these forums and constructive criticism is your invaluable friend.

Have fun.

how to make a new thread?

i have a problem to discuss but i couldn’t find a right place that suitable for my problem

What is the type of your new problem?

Welcome!

Welcome, Kindle, to the Unity Community

Just click on that big “Post New Thread” button.

Don’t worry about the who making the most awesome game in three months thing lol. I’m taking the right most path  And the purpose of the thread was to be an introduction. The question was just an afterthought and saw no purpose in creating a whole new thread.

Welcome!

Will you take Gigi’s challenge?

Khyrid offers good advice. And, I’ll to take it one step further - I challenge you to build and finish a project completely, in 12 weeks.

… The reason you may believe that is impossible is because your experiences as a gamer will push you to take on a project MUCH too grand. A great way to succeed is to start with a very simple idea for a game. Then cut 90% of that idea and then 50% of what’s left. Now you are close to a core idea that you may be able to implement in 12 weeks. As Khyrid suggests, thousands just like you have fallen into the, ‘Now I’m ready to start a 2-year project’, and if you do, you will likely lose your way somewhere on the left path.

Gigi.

Welcome to the forums!
