// Hello World!

Hello folks,
I’m new around here, just saying Hello!

• What if TV or Movies where like Games?
If every film that was made HAD to offer original ideas and ground breaking storylines to be successful.

Thoughts?

in my opinion not many games are ground breakingly original any more. Most games piggy back on ideas or concepts that were successful in the past and tweak it a little bit here or there. Some of the popular movies and tv shows today are from characters that were created by comic book publishers such as DC or Marvel, no originality there but widely successful.

Movies and TV are already like video games in many respects. Most movies today are just sequels or extensions of an existing franchise, the same with most AAA games. TV has become derivative similarly.

Ground breaking video games getting success are exceedingly rare in comparison to the total number of new games coming out, and are often done with small budgets or independent studios, as a AAA budget is considered too risky to bet on something unproven. The same can be said for movies and TV.

The Wilhelm Scream is the biggest asset flip in the movie industry, though its fun to watch out for :wink:

With a couple pf notable exceptions, unique games rarely do well. Those that do are quickly followed by clones, so they don’t stay unique for long.

Funny how “players” are against re-playing the same thing, yet ask - “Where’s half-life 3?”

Obviously developers want to capture the ‘genie in the bottle’ more then once. however, I strongly feel that what makes a game work, is the TEAM of people working on it. From the developers and testers to the sales and support people. This means you have people who are part of a network that produces an end product that blows everything out of the water consistently. Once the main event is over, that group of people usually disbands and the flavour is lost forever…

Once a game brand is established, it’s easier to forecast how much it’s worth, thus it’s easy to get funding and find staff to produce the product. Many times re-useing the engine. If a new engine was made every iteration- everyone who works on that platform would need to learn a new method of workflow and it would be counterproductive.

For instance, if the UI for your favourite game where switched on you every time you logged in- you would have no idea how to interact with the game…Well it’s the same with tools and code. Take Unity for example- Imagine if they added all kinds of new features every day. I KNOW I’d be overwhelmed.

TV isn’t like that- you can’t interact with it- thus all they need to do is think of something to capture you until the add completes. Games don’t have this luxury yet. Looking forward to more games like Card-Life that allow the user to “create” resources and perhaps build a new industry that can support itself.

and please - I understand the superhero fantasy thing … no more super heroes or zombies kthx

That whole art VS trade argument thing. # Rosanne…
