Help defining a system. (Buying a new computer)

Hi.

I hope this is the right place to ask.

I’ve been using Unity (free) with an Intel MacBook. Basically because that’s what I had at my disposal. It may not be a great system to work with…but it worked.

I have an opportunity to purchase a brand new computer at a discount.

There are some limitations.

It must be PC. It must be based on ASUS (board, etc.).

I’m hoping to upgrade to a purchased Unity in the future and would like this computer to serve me for the next few years (Three?). My needs as far as I can see - Unity, 3d App - C4d, Blender, etc. , Photoshop, etc. I’d also like it to be able to run AAA games - so I can be in touch with what’s going on in the gaming world (at the moment I only play Armagetron Advanced  - But I wouldn’t want to invest too much extra just in order for this computer to be a games machine.)

What I figured I’d be shooting for (as long as it fits into my budget):

an i7 processor - though I don’t know which one.
4 gigabytes of ram.
Some Nvidia Gfx card - again, I don’t know which model I’d want.
500Gb drive.

Any help with choosing a processor / Gfx card + any other specs is appreciated.

This may not be the appropriate forum for this.

No replies. I guess no one is facing similar questions. Or I’m posting on the wrong board.

It looks like I’m going to go with something like an I7 860 with 4gbram and somekind of nvidia based Gfx card. probably 1gb. maybe based on the 460GTX kit. Not sure yet.

Any help is appreciated.

I’ve been digging deeper into this…

Would it be worth holding out for Sandy Bridge to show up (Beginning of 2011 supposedly) - I figure that may bring down the prices and also offer some higher end alternatives for competitive prices, though an unknown for now; but then again, maybe I’m better off just getting a computer and being done with this wait.
