[help]Importing asset in format .ma

I spend 90 dollars for a maya model, they give me two files named “XXX_Material.ma” and “XXXX_Textured.ma”. When I tried to import them into Unity3D, some errors said:

“Maya could not be found.
Make sure that maya is installed and the maya file has maya as its ‘Open with’ application!”

I never used a model from maya, do I need to install Maya? How can I use the model in Unity?

I appreciate very much for your kindly help. Thanks

You need Maya installed on the same computer as Unity for Unity to be able import/translate the MA file into FBX format in the background. If at all possible, have the people you bought the models from export the files out to FBX for you.

Thank you so much, Ethan. Do you mean that if I convert the model into FBX, I can directly import it into Unity?

Yes, if you can get the file in FBX format you should be fine.

Hi, Ethan

I installed Maya 2009 on my Mac, but when I imported the model into unity, there is something wrong with unity, I need to restart unity and failed to importing it.

I also exported the model in FBX format, also did not work. But I tried other maya and fbx models that can be imported into Unity.

Have you ever met this problem? Is it convenience for you to try my model?

Thanks a lot.

Sure I’ll take a look… just send it to ethan at unity3d dot com.
