Help & Question about Patent Trolls.

As an indie game design with a project going on that is planned to go on Kickstarter very soon and then get on Steam or maybe just publish it on our website…

How do I prevents from paying all the expenses of law suits of Patent Trolls… is there any way in the world to prevent that?

Thanks.

Why would you think that would be something you need to worry about?

Because many indie games fail because of these patent trolls they just sue and you waste money ( I dont really understand how thy work but that’s as far as I know ) they do that to many companies startups and games.

What exactly are you planning on patenting? Very few games have any kind of patent , the only thing you would patent is game mechanics, and from what i understand that can be hard to do.

What you can do is trade mark…

Yea… that doesn’t really ever happen. Copyright infringement maybe, but that is easy to avoid

Got a link to these many games? or specific information? you seem to be scared by campfire ghost stories?

No, I assure you indie games are failing for reasons other than simply patent trolls. Why would a patent troll go after the small fry after all? Better to go after someone actually worthwhile.

The patent for car racing games where you have a ghost car driving your previous record lap was enforced (meaning they wanted money or sued). Not sure if that patent is still valid, it is old…

But yes, as indie I would not care.

If they legitimately own the patent then they aren’t trolls. You can always ask them to send the patent details, country it is registered in & the registration number & then do an online search to see if it is a real one.

There was a patent on mini games during loading screen. (which has expired recently)

…and then he opened the door AND THERE WAS NO ONE THERE. Ooooooohhhh…

(and then someone with a patent sued him)
