HELP! Serious shadow problem in my project

Hello - HELP!

All of a sudden I’ve started to get really weird shadow artifacts occurring in my project. I’ve attached a short screen capture to show exactly what I mean (it’s only 320KB).

It looks to me to be a problem with the shadow redrawing?

The shadows flicker on and off in a very pixellated way when the view-camera is moved, and often the shadows just disappear altogether. As the video shows, selecting the camera in the Hierachy (or changing any camera setting) causes the shadow to draw correctly again until the view is moved - anybody know what’s going on here please??

If a create a new project from scratch, this problem does not occur and shadow work fine, which would appear to point to a problem in my project file (or a setting I’ve screwed?) - but I have invested way too much time on the current project to consider starting again.

In the video clip, I just created a new scene then added the standard game objects (plane, cube, directional light and camera) to clearly show what I’m seeing…

Please can anyone shed any light on this, so to speak!?

Trying to reproduce this… did you by chance set the shadow distance in the Project Quality settings to some extremely high number? When I set it to over 100 thousand I get something resembling the problem you’re having.

No the shadow distance in my project is 50…

Is your video card part of the Radeon X1xxx range? There are known problems with shadows and render textures on those cards due to a bad Apple driver… you’ll see those problems until Apple fixes that driver, sadly.

The good news is your customers won’t see them unless they too are on an Apple with one of those cards. So hopefully it’s only a cosmetic annoyance.

hmmm this is odd. I just saved the little test scene I made for that video and switched back and forth between the scenes a few times and the shadows in the viewer are now back and not flickering - HOWEVER, I now have no shadows in the game view at all…

that’s interesting StarManta (my card is Radeon X1600) - although that doesn’t explain why it was all working fine until recently, does it? Unless this known issue is intermittent?

In my experience it does seem to be intermittent.

Did you do an OS update recently? I think it is a >= 10.5.3 problem.
And yes, it is intermittent. And yes, it is known.

I’m using 10.5.4, but did not upgrade that recently.

For the record, Unity 2.1 appears to have resolved the shadow problem (at least for now) - it also reports on the issue with the Radeon X1xxx cards - prompting to wait for the a fix from Apple.
