As some of you may know, I’ve been a Unity Asset Store publisher for several years. It’s been a lot of fun helping you out with your projects and making your game look its best. Many of us are constantly looking for ways to better serve the Unity community and find it difficult to interface with customers in the store.
Would you mind helping me out? I’m trying to gather information for me and my fellow publishers so that we can better develop art content for you. Would you mind taking this quick Unity Asset Store survey? It’s not affiliated with Unity Technologies or its partners.
Answers are anonymous and the results are public for all to see.
I did your poll, but really it is not that good. Too many of the answers were ´depends´.
Would you buy a patch that adds new content and fixes… well fixes should be free, but sometimes new content could have a cost.
I cannot speak for anyone else, but I am a HUGE sucker for the way the packages are done by Protofactor and 3dForge. You buy a package that is a decent deal, but then they add to that package over time which really makes you feel like you got a huge bargain ( if you bought in early). Nothing makes you a fan of a business than getting freebies every few months as a thank you for your previous purchase.
I completely understand. As I was writing it, I knew there were certain conditions that would change answers, so I narrowed it down to forcing you into a potentially difficult choice. To me, it can be more meaningful.
Free updates are certainly a big plus and it’s something I do to my major packs and would recommend to all publishers if it makes sense. Thanks for your response!
I took the survey, but there are definitely some places where my answers, all of which are unfortunately required, could not be accurate.
I think it’s great that Asset Store content producers are trying to gather more information to help them and their customers. Because of this, I’ve taken the time to answer a few of the questions more accurately than your survey allowed. I’ve also included what I selected in case you want to remove those answers from the tally total.
Most of what I buy would fall into the $10 to $20 range on average. Honestly, using an “average” for someone like me is worthless because I’ve bought a number of very inexpensive items and a number of code packages that were $30 or $40 or more. (I picked the $15-$25 range.)
The answer I needed was $0. I would have no interest in that package. The same goes for the models in the next question. (I chose the lowest dollar amount listed.)
For a serious asset, I only buy it when I need it for the project. I bought a bunch of stuff I never used early on, so I’ve stopped that.
However, I am more likely to buy something that might be interesting if it’s on sale; buying it just to play around with it or to tear it apart and learn from it.
Since there is only Option 1, whatever that means, I guess I render in Option 1??
After finishing the survey, that question changed to three options. Unfortunately, this is another question that needs a “none of the above” or “it varies” type answer. (I picked “Forward”.)
I look at the “What’s new” section, the employee picks, the daily deal, and any big Madness or whatever sales. The daily deal is mostly just to find things that might be fun to tear apart. The list of new things on the Asset Store is for adding things to my wish list for future projects. (I picked the “search bar” since I use that when I’m trying to find something specific.)
It’s a cool idea but seems to be for 3D. I noticed things such as PBR which I’ve seen people discussing around here and have no clue what it is and no interest in finding out at this time. I know it means Physically Based Rendering. Just not sure how it’d help me making something like Space Invaders. lol
Anyway good luck with the poll.
A publisher specializing in 2D art needs to do this kind of poll too.
Thanks for your responses though. They help no matter what! If you have other colleagues and friends who frequent the store, please run this survey by them. Thanks!
It wasn’t about gauging interest, but how much you think you, or everyone else, would be expected to pay.
This question is meant to gauge your reaction to seeing something out of the sale, not in the sale. It’s understood that people would be more inclined to purchase something when it is on sale if they have no current need of it
Well, you have to pick one. It’s not possible in the engine to pick otherwise.
my process for ´on sale´ or ´out of sale´ is this. And this is with the understanding that we still have a year of development and haven´t touched some parts of the game yet.
I made a huge wishlist of everything I know I am going to buy ( about 90 items currently). I also included some things I like, but I think are too expensive.
When we reach a point in development where we need something, we buy it regardless if it is on sale. But if something from my wishlist goes on sale ( 35% or more) then I buy it even if we don´t currently need it. I have probably bought 40 items so far from the store, most of which were things we don´t need yet, but I know we will need later on, and they went on sale so I grabbed them. But you have to realize buying something we don´t currently need just because it is on sale is a big dangerous too. Gaia is a perfect example, it would have been very easy to pay $100 for a ´sale´ version of a Gaia competitor a few months ago, but now you can get Gaia for $30.
