Help with controllers desperately needed

I’m a complete novice when it comes to Unity but I’ve managed to create a scene and all the basics for a generic racing game except one thing. The racer. I’ve got the model and I can grasp the basics of controllers but I can’t seem to get them to work together in harmony at all. All I want is a car that moves forward when I press forward (or back) and that turns when I press turn. It’s the only thing holding me back! Also, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s for a very early prototype so any help is fantastic.

Controller as in the input device, or controller as in the script that translates input into movement? You can find a good introduction to the latter in the Lerpz tutorial, including code that you can use as a starting point for creating your own. If you’ve already gotten that far, you’ll need to post more specific details of what you need help with – preferably with sample code demonstrating the point at which you got stuck.
