Help with Developing

Hello, I am a Senior in High School and was assigned a “Senior Inquiry Project” a.k.a SIPS. SIPS is a prject where each individual must learn something new on their own and document resources and information through primary and secondary resources. My project I chose was to construct my own game of some type but don’t know where to start.

The only problem is, I don’t know where to start. My questions vary from?

  1. What type of games can I make with Unity 4?
  2. How long based on creativity will this prject take? ( I have 6 weeks to construct this game)
  3. Is there any other programs that could be useful to creating my game?
  4. Is it possible to build with game with another person from a different computer?

Please respond freely as I am willing to accept all answers and will consider each option. If there are any questiosn I didn’t type, please free to give me any hints and tips into constructing my game. I will be posting the final result on the website when finished. Any responses wil be quoted in my project as i am using this as a primary source for information and I am also willing to interview someone through skype, etc.

Thank you

  1. Anything
  2. From 1 month to 100 years, depending.
  3. Plenty. Blender and Gimp come to mind.
  4. Yes, you can collaborate. Without the asset server (not free) it’s harder, but not impossible.

My advice is to pick a very, very, very easy game. It should be so small and easy that you’re tempted to say, “That’s not really a game!”

Some ideas:

Shooting Gallery
On-Rails Shooter
Hide 'N Seek Platformer (an object randomly moves around the map and you have to find it.)

Things you should not attempt:

3D Platformer
FPS
MMO
RPG
JPRG
Anything that you currently think would take more than a week to make.

You will massively underestimate the time required for this project. Plan to have it all done within a week and it’ll take you the full 6 weeks.

I wouldn’t even consider 3D if you only got 6 weeks. Stick to really simple objectives, like the person above me suggested.

I mostly agree with wccrawford. A 3D platformer could be attempted, but you shouldn’t try to give it a whole lot of features. See the (now somewhat outdated) 3D platformer tutorial offered by Unity.

That’s not very good advice. 6 weeks is more than enough time to make a 3D game. I generally compete in Ludum Dare when it rolls around, and I can make a working 3D game in under 48 hours. It isn’t hard. How long it takes depends on the complexity of the game, not how many dimensions it’s in (unless you try to go 4 and beyond. Then things get a little messy).

That’s true, but judging from the questions he asked, it seemed like he was completely new to game development.

Depends on your programming skills. If you plan on learning to program, learn asset creation (whether 3d, 2d or sound) and make a game in 6 weeks, its gonna be tough. Keep in mind Unity is not a game maker but a game engine. A game engine provides you with tools that will speed up development time, but it wont create the game for you. You’d probably be better off with using GameMaker, or something similar.

I’m creating a game for my Senior Project as well. And honestly, a lot of these answers are based on what you know.

  1. Unity3D can make anything you put your mind to. However, some will be much harder than others, see: MMO.
  2. Again, depends on the game. I made a simple space shooter (whose scripts are open source) in about 3 days. It’s based off a tutorial, but I only did it to convert scripts so people on this forum can learn boo. It didn’t happen.
  3. See: Blender, Autodesk for Students (Free Autodesk Software) (for 3D modeling. For programming, no.)
  4. Yes. But use something like Github to converse the code (and actually, the models.) But you have to learn how to use Git, which with the Github client, is easy as hell.

I’m making a 3D game for my Senior Project, however, I do not need a completed project, just a beta at the least.

What WE need to know:

  1. Do you know Programming?
  2. Do you know 3D modeling?
  3. Do you know organization?
  4. Do you know how to find good SFX, or to make it?
  5. Are you good at working with other people?
  1. Like everyone else has said, anything but given the time frame keep it simple.
  2. In high school I created a physics based bowling game and engine I designed from scratch in 5 weeks. Yes it had glitches…but it worked! I think with the engine already in place you have plenty of time to make whatever you want.
  3. Blender, GIMP, Dropbox!!!
  4. Use dropbox! It is probably your best friend when it comes to collaboration.

As far as the “Don’t consider 3D” because of time issues?? That’s just ridiculous. A 2d game can take just as much time as a 3d game.

Things you could probably do:

Very simple platformer
Very simple FPS (Single player survival mode)

Or like wccrawford said - shooting gallery - on rails shooter

The very FIRST game I ever created was in flash, it was a side scrolling space shooter. Basically Galaga, but on it’s side…Did it in about a week. Looking back, it looked like crap, had a LOT of glitches, but it was playable!

I thank each opinion you all brought me and will consider the options given. i do have experience with programs like Gimp and will use those skills to help my game creation. I plan on taking the online class to learn the basics of Unity to help me with the essentials of developing a game. I do know how to program and do 3D graphics. I am willing to cooperate with others and will take any help given.
