Help with lighting problem...

So I'm trying to figure out how to make the lighting work in this game I'm making, but since I'm a Unity noob, I'm running into problems...

The game is set in a house and one of the basic aspects of the game play is being able to turn the lights off and on. I'm trying to make a basic prototype to see if I can pull this off. Basically, I want the lighting to be close to pitch black when the lights go off and then slowely brighten. I think I've figured this out from a scripting standpoint (by increasing the light intensity at extremely small increments per second). What I'm having problems with is 1) getting the room to start off close to pitch black and 2) I'm using a point light, so when I increase the intensity, it lights up circles on the walls, I would rather it light up the room at the same intensity throughout.

Does anyone know of any ways to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Why you not Try Beast Lightmaps...
