Help with Texture Painting

So far I’ve tried my hand at modeling, programming, and texture panting. I need some help with the last:

I know, it’s hard to tell. It was supposed to be a brick wall. It’s not all that bad for a first try, but it doesn’t look anything like like the video I tried to follow:

It looks more like (crappy) stone slabs in a cement wall. It also looks to… Painted maybe? I’m using a Wacom tablet to paint.

Any tips on how to improve?

Spend more time on it. The difference between the one you see in the video and the one you posted is the level of detail you put into it. Try using a rough brush.

In photoshop at least, you can change the random rotation, density and opacity of the brush to get a more organic feel to it so it doesn’t look like it was painted with just a soft brush.

I am sure gimp has a similar feature. Just may have to do a bit of research. I’d also take a nice look at real life reference pictures of what you are wanting to create. That will give you an idea where shadows go and where light makes the stones look a bit shiny.

For practice, I take a real photo texture, drop it in a layer below where I will be painting. And then I paint over it to try and match the shape and value of the color in the picture.

I do use PS. My problem is that after I get about to the stage I show here, I don’t know where to go to add more detail. Your method sounds like a good idea though.

Probably your next step would be to get a little more definition in between your brinks and your wall. I would add more detail to the cement or what ever is behind the bricks. Very rarely do I see a texture that is just a flat color.
