Heroes of the Monkey Tavern [Steam Greenlight]

Hi,
I finished my game and released it on Steam Greenlight, it is a pure classical dungeon crawler game, like the old Dungeon Master, Might & Magic or more recently the excellent Legend of Grimrock.

I put a lot of effort on the interface, make it as simple as it could be, you can even play totally to the game with a gamepad.

I also liked so much the musics that I made them accessible from the menu, and put some events to intensify the player experience.

I plan to sell it between 5 and 10 €, so a little game but more than a little fun

Key Features :

  • Dungeon exploration in grid-base movement
  • 8 classes
  • 3 difficulty levels
  • 2 hours of music
  • Real time fights
  • 22 different ennemies, including 6 bosses
  • Keyboard and gamepad ready
  • Nearly 6 hours of game
  • Numerous traps and secrets
  • More than 100 unique items

I need your votes to pass this greenlight phase, so do not hesitate :

Thanks, and ask me anything I’ll answer it

I like these kind of games but I think you took too long to get to action in your trailer (I was actually wondering if there were bad guys at all).

i think you also need to work a bit more on the why this game.

Hi TheRaider,
First thanks for your answer.
You are not the first one to tell it that to me about the trailer, I will have a look
Besides I did not want to spoil the game so I put the worst ennemies and the simplest enigmas, maybe not the best choice but I wanted that for the future players

About the why, you mean on the Greenlight campaign or here?

Both, you aren’t exactly full of positivity of why play this game, which looks like it has potential.

Ah Ok, you should play it because it is the best game ever!!!

Hihi, I think people should play it if they want to spend a good time, I worked four years on it to make it exactly how I wanted it.

If there was a bad pixel on a 1024 * 1024 texture and I had to pass 2 hours to correct it, knowing I was the only one to see it, I took it. Because if I did not I could not sleep.

I listened hundreds of hours of music to be sure to have the best one I could find for the game.

I spent all my time to bring something shape and accurate, having in mind only the pleasure of the player.

Now my best arguments will come from the players I hope

Let me give a better example. This is what legend of grimlock said when they were promoting it
“Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution.”

whereas you said
"There is nothing revolutionnary on it, but I made my best to bring a pleasant adventure. "

But I do hope you do well.

Ok, very good example, I changed it.

Thanks for your advice.

@TheRaider - you said pretty much everything I was going to mention while watching the trailer, before scrolling down to see your posts.

I’ll add just a little - about the trailer, suggest intermixing enemies with the dungeon traversal.
Everybody who enjoys these games (I’m one of them) already know about how they are played, how to switch the levers and avoid the traps and side step the fireballs. Those are in every dungeon crawler that is worth playing. So assuming other players are similar to me - we want to see the action, and the cool enemies, and things that are new to the genre.
The first 50 seconds of the trailer is just showing what all these games have in common. Good execution on that - and take no offense here but - BORING - You will loose a lot of peoples attention with this trailer because they will click next in under 30 seconds.
Add an enemy attack within the first 15 seconds of the trailer, then maybe a short (5 second or less) common dungeon crawl moment, then some more action.
I’d even suggest maybe showing the very first glimpse of the creature at the end of the trailer (dragon?) because the sound effect is kind of subtle.

Give the players something to look forward to playing - give them some anticipation and excitement.

Also - It’s great you have created something you love, and you have been meticulous about the development and put in 2000 hours making sure everything is perfect - but reality is - people don’t care how much time you spent, and how much blood you spilled and how many late nights you worked through.
All most people care about is the end product. So tell them - sell them the end product. Don’t sell them how much you worked on the product.

Nice work on adding complete gamepad support.

I came asking for a fish, and you taught me how to fish.
So a the beginning I thought “I am hungry and I am wasting my time fishing, it is not what I want, I want A fish”
And after a while I understood it was the best gift possible.

You are right in every point, I tried to show the less possible on my trailer to not spoil the content of the game, to let the players discover everything and be happy while doing it, but if nobody plays my game there will be nothing to spoil.

Same about my speech, I did not guess Greenlight was so difficult to pass, so I begin to be negative, and you can feel it on my words. A negative speech can only make you close this page.

So thanks a lot to both of you for taking the time to explain me how I can do better, I will do a new trailer and prepare a selling speech, the work I did deserves it.

You take care, and thanks again.

Just a remember a few seconds of something later in the game doesn’t spoil it, it gives you something to look forward too.

Just look at movie trailers for films you have seen to see how much they gave away and how little impact it had when you watched the movie. Star Wars with bb8 was a great example.

Thanks to your advices I updated my trailer, here is the beast :

That trailer - makes me want to play your game - it’s a little slow at the beginning, but you get to the action much quicker and it holds the viewers attention throughout - with a very good - interesting, exciting ending.

Also cool burning text at the end. Howd you do that? It’s a nice effect.
:sunglasses:

Hi,
I was proud of my previous trailer but I am clearly not a marketing guy.
Thanks to you and TheRaider who pointed my biggest mistakes I could take a better way, so thank you to come back and tell me it is better, it counts for me.
About the burning title I did it with AfterEffect following this tutorial :
