Hi guys! As you know the creatures full pack volume 2 is now complete and it’s now time to move on. It’s been decided to work on some nice heroic fantasy bosses. Here is the dedicated thread for them. Nothing is set in stone yet, and I’m totally opened to suggestions, inspirational references etc… We already started discussing about all this in the creatures volume 2 thread. But now is the time to bring your thoughts back in here, to see what’s possible to do.
HEROIC FANTASY BOSSES PACKS will be a set of packs including max 5 BOSSES / pack. to keep it easy and affordable enough for most indies.
For sure, I’m thinking about dramatic bosses experience, where you have to find some kind of weak points to get them hurt in order to really deal damages. Think like poking a cyclops in his eye, kneel on the floor to recup, and here is the moment where you can actually deal damages etc…
So for sure, a wraith / reaper with giant scythe seems obvious candidate to be a boss… maybe some kind of earth titan ( something between a giant golem and a tree ent). Giant demons etc…
This thread is opened to suggestions so keep them coming, if some don’t get created they can be inspiring to create something more unique…
High poly, highly detailed boss characters might be cool. As for working with mobile, my impression is that it’s easy to decimate models these days with inexpensive plugins like SimpleLOD.
These characters would be designed for PC, so yes, a decent amount of polys would be used. Also, since now PBR is around they’ll be ready for that as well as having the legacy ones.
That can be an idea. Something that can blend nicely in a volcano or arctic layout to surprise the player… Would have to try to make it really stand out from the golem in creatures volume 1 though.
Since our project is so poor, (I actually bought your animal packs for my partner for Xmas out of my own pocket heh) can we just pay now for what you have so far
heh. but seriously. Most bosses are so predictable. Big, Smash, Tear, Crush
King & Queen of Faeries (anyone who is laughing now doesn’t know Faeries), I am thinking horns and tails and wings.
Rippling sinew and crippling glamour. Beautiful but terrible. Stymphalian Birds with a facelift and decent clothes. Maybe have some bosses with implied power - or special talents - rather than just muscles.
Big dragons or giant worms that might eat you might be a fun thing too of course. Or maybe a Hydra. A bit this depends also on how much bigger they will be. Also the standard stuff with tentacles and so would be an option too. I think it also depends a lot about what options for such bosses can be build in like climbing on their backs, have bosses destroy environment and such the like. This makes a good part of the fun also.
Well, hydra and dragon were already created in creatures volume 1. Though I’m interested in doing a new dragon that won’t be part of a pack.
giant worm ca be fun.something like the giant sarlak crossed with the one from lost planet 1. Big humungus creature that you can climb on can be really fun. As you mentioned before, a set of climbing, balancing animations would maybe be necessary. Destructible environment can be really cool and add to the drama and tension in a boss battle. Lots of interesting ideas.
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Herakles/birds.html “Some versions of the legend say that these Stymphalian birds were vicious man-eaters. The 2nd century A.D. travel writer, Pausanias, trying to discover what kind of birds they might have been, wrote that during his time a type of bird from the Arabian desert was called “Stymphalian,” describing them as equal to lions or leopards in their fierceness. He speculated that the birds Hercules encountered in the legend were similar to these Arabian birds”
Hi guys! first boss is on his way! Hope you guys will like it. It’s PBR ready for unity, 21 Ktris, 43 bones, 4096*4096 albedo, specular, gloss, AO, normal map. still need the animation set. It will have on place animation as well as root motion variation. Not sure when it will be ready though, some freelance gig is on the way…
