Hexagon 2.5.5.

I bought this a couple of days ago. Seems very powerfull and I’m liking it a lot. It exports to obj which is good as Unity supports obj.

Now my current pipeline is as follows:

Hexagon - All modelling (uvmapping also when I learn it)

Fragmotion - Love this app - Adding bones and animations

Ultimate Unwrap 3d Pro 3.22 ( UVMaps and export to fbx and other formats)

What does everybody else use now and what are their pipelines?

Please don’t ask me to use 3d Studio Max or Maya as both demos have run out and ther are both way overkill for what I need and way out my budget at the moment.

I may in a couple of months though upgrade to Carrara as it seems an all in one solution for rigging, animation and modelling. It is expensive though but I’ll have to think carefully if I do want to buy Carrara as people have been pimping Cinema4D and that looks awesome also and is affordable.

Cinema4D is affordable and Carrara is expensive? I think you’ve got that backwards.

I used to use Fragmotion + Ultimate Unwrap3D when I was developing for DX Studio. Easy-peasy to use. I’ve played with Hex, but never got too deep into it. I’ve also used Carrara for several years, love its material editor and terrain tools. Unfortunately the .FBX export is pretty lame.

Check for one of my old posts on Carrara. There’s a book on the Daz3D site for $30 that includes copies of Carrara and Hex.

FWIW, my work flow at present is Blender for modeling and light baking, and Carrara for materials, normal and specular baking.

I am also intersted in Cinema4d as an relatively affordable alternative to the suite : Silo (Or hexagon)+ 3dCoat + Messiah
The advantage would be of course to have an all in one application
But the key question is

Is the FBX Cinema4d export module to Unity FULLY reliable ?

I was about to purchase cinema4d a time ago taking advantage of the special offer but I was scared shiless , reading the comments of some cinema4d /Unity3d users

Blender is actually a really nice open source(free) modeling/animation program to get you started

if you are on a budget and want something a bit more solid, MODO is amazing, personal favorite outside of maya  UV layout is great for Uvs, I can do a full person in about 5 minutes

Does Modo export animated FBX files ?

It does and to be sure, you can bake the key frames before export.
