Wow… this makes me extremely jealous of 3D MMORPG’s.
Makes me wish I could have afforded that instead.
Oh well… 2.5D has its benefits, I guess…
$35 per month or $350 a year? Yikes, that’s a little steep for a membership. I think they would make more money selling the courses individually. I mean, why would someone want to pay so much for probably one or two articles/videos they want to learn? It seems like in the long run, unless you have a ton of stuff you want to learn from their site, they are charging too much for their services. But I was never one who would want to pay for that kind of thing to begin with, so that’s probably why I think that way.
That’s a bit of an overstatement if you read the article.
It sounds as though they’ll be very light on details, more of a post-mortem type of deal, letting you listen in on design discussions and that’s about it. Documenting the process not really teaching you how to create an MMO with Photon and Unity.
On page 4 they state they won’t be giving source code out, apparently in the belief that people would just download the code and cancel their subscription.
Yea… that didn’t really make much sense to me either.
How is anyone suppose to learn how to create a MMO if they cut out and don’t teach the part where…you know…they CREATE the game?
I think the price is entirely fair, and actually really cheap if it taught you something.
And to be honest… they wouldn’t even need to distribute the source code to prevent ppl from grabbing it and running. They could just provide it via the videos, which forces people to watch the entire video to grab the source code, as you have to type it one bit at a time.
Without any code, this is a pointless tutorial, as code makes up 99.99% of making a MMORPG. That is…excluding the graphics, which you have to also get yourself.
What are they teaching???
I’m pretty sure this is their intention. They will be providing source code through watching the videos, but you can’t just subscribe, download the entirety of the source, and cancel your sub.
I think you have it backwards. The art and content makes up 99.99% of a MMO. Other than evolving interest management techniques, the code itself is straightforward dikumud fare. Especially with something like Photon to stand on.
you have misread the article.
I’m inviting you to listen to their last two radio shows for more information, search their forum for accurate infos.
It will be an in depht journey to indeed make an MMO, they just don’t want to provide the code as files, but like their last videos about unity you will see all the code being typed on screen.
They are talking about showing the parts about design decisions etc, because it’s an important part of the process of the entire development of any game, and people will give inputs if they want to. And they even considering to give for few dollars dvd sets of the entire videos to people who make the full project.
For people who have the time, and want to learn, and if they can afford the 350$/year, it is not so expensive.
Again i 'm inviting you to read again carefully the article and the 3DBuzz forum and listen to the radio shows for accurate infos, they will show and teach everything and if you code along the project you will own the code and could make your MMO. About the assets, if i’m correct (not sure at all) they will be available to subscribers following the project but you won’t be granted to use them in any public playable release.
Oh… are you sure?
Because I’m about 90% done with the art contents (which is a ****load) and about to start on the code part (which is all that is left, besides music and sound effects).
So you’re saying I’m already 90% done?
I actually believe you… as my oldest brother (both my brothers are professional programmers) also said the same thing. I had forgotten though… and my older brother says he is wrong.
That basically if I had all of the graphics, animations, art content, etc. I can pretty much make the game pretty quickly and easily. And this was just when I was developing it for Java, before I quit Java and found Unity.
But are you sure? Honestly, the coding aspect sounds like it’ll be one hell of a workload.
Wow…
I will DEFINITELY be subscribing for a full year if they do indeed provide the code in the videos. I figured they would…since they are obviously smarter than me, and even I, a fool, came up with the “at least in the videos please!!” idea.
Thank you SamSam.
And although I think it is a bit expensive, it isn’t compared to ANY other form of education. Unless I’m mistaken, this will teach A LOT of information, and very high quality information. Colleges Universities charge $300+ per credit hour, and even community colleges charge $30-$60 per credit hour. This will pretty much be about 1% the price of what it would cost anywhere else in the world. Whether that is via private tutor or via College Courses.
Yes it will be an over the shoulder thing with the code and video, explained and typed up on video. this is my understanding as i asked this question during the last radio show. But you do need to type it up yourself, no source code handed out which is right in my opinion for many reasons. Also the meetings are open to members that want to partecipate (skype/irc I think). If you can’t make the meeting you can see what happened in the encoded video, all is documented. Also some people are more interested in the planning/design of things, especially those who can already code well.
What if you dont got money… cause you spent it on something in real life? you can be a memeber without giving you money? thats a rip off.\
and if you wanna learn to make a game do what im doing. just mess around with unity. dont go and pass some dude money to teach you. use the hack and slash tuts on how to make a RPG then use one of the networking tuts too add the MMO to the RPG
yes…don’t give people money if they invest their time to teach you something. instead they should really pay me money if i would allow them to code my MMO, but i am that selfish that i am not going to allow them to code it for me …MUHAHAHAHAA
wow shows how dumb the people are these days well c ya
you re-read your own post?
ProjectOne is correct. Coding will be a major (if not the primary) focus in the course, and I’m happy to explain why.
We already offer tons of 3D art videos over at 3D Buzz. Since this class is free to Member Sponsors, and since Member Sponsors can already view literally hundreds of hours of content over Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Photoshop, and more, we’re not going to burn a gigantic percentage of lecture time rehashing details that have already been beaten into the ground in our own content. I think you’ll agree that that’s fair.
At the same time, we will be presenting solid overviews of artistic assets. The kind of thing where if you’re already proficient in the 3D app of your choice, you’ll say, “Ah, yeah, I see how I could do that.” I’ll be doing most of those videos myself, and I can assure you, if you’re comfortable in a 3D app, you’ll walk away knowing how it was done. But are we going to go vertex by vertex and model it out for you? No, but only because there’s plenty of that sort of fare on our site for your learning digestion.
So how will we be presenting the coding? Screen capture during the programming process. You’ll see in-depth whiteboard lecture breaking down critical theory behind each system, and then we walk you through the actual coding. Our goal is to code as much as we possibly can on screen, and if for some reason there’s a system that isn’t coded right in front of you, we’ll be presenting you with a thorough walkthrough of each line of code so that you know what it’s doing and know how you could reproduce it on your end.
No, we won’t be handing out source code. I’m sorry, I know some folks count on that. I realize the temptation of just coding in one or two areas, copy/pasting anything that’s giving you a nasty bug, and calling it a day. Unfortunately, that’s not our intention for the class. We sincerely believe in pushing you to actually do the coding yourself. And, as we have already said and has been mentioned here, there are security concerns with just handing out the source for such a project. I’m sure you understand those reasons.
Member Sponsors already get so much exclusive content over at 3D Buzz, literally many hundreds of hours across thousands of videos. If you’re wanting to learn more about 3D and/or programming we believe it to be a highly valuable resource. We’re offering this class as a way to thank our Member Sponsors, which is why we’re not just charging for it as its own product.
We’re extremely excited about the opportunity to teach this class, but we realize the style won’t be for everyone. Heck, lots of people hate training videos, and would rather read books. Some folks hate books and would rather go to a physically based classroom. Still others would rather just figure it out for themselves and get the world to just leave them alone. However you chose to learn, we’re just glad you’re trying to learn Unity, and we believe that we have an extremely useful class lined up that may help many of you. And I hope you agree!
I’m very happy to answer any remaining questions you might have. I realize that article is pretty big, but it does answer a lot of the major questions we’ve been receiving. So does the registration page. If there’s anything else at all you’d like to know, just email me at zak@3dbuzz.com. I’ll get back to you promptly.
Thanks,
Zak Parrish

PS - And before you think we’re just in it for the $$$, jump over to this thread and see the FREE videos we’re releasing all the time. We’ve got over 70 hours of Unity 3 training starting from the very beginning and running up through the creation of a 3D platformer with a custom camera and character system (including teaching you all the necessary C# scripting in fine detail), and showing you how to set up an animated character and get it fully integrated and playable in Unity! Again, totally free for download right now!
I just can’t see us as being all that greedy when we’ve already produced and released about 2 full work weeks worth of killer content for anyone who wants it!
well im not paying for it
and if your gonna learn to “model” or something
YOUTUBE IT
WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO THAT VIDEOS WILL BE AWESOME!
emergence I hope you’ll learn something, record that videos and everything and put it on the piratebay and you’ll be the king > : )
This probably wouldn’t be a very wise idea, since his personal information plastered all over the Internet for anyone who wants to find him, thanks to our watermark system.
