High Intensity Lights + Reflection Probes = Extreme buggy lighting (just some GFX cards)

Hi everyone,

we are currently on the finishing line for our game. The console porting team now brought up an issue (for Xbox Series), which we saw a while back ago for a PC playtester with an old Radeon Grafics card. We are now also able to see this issue (build + editor, yaih) with an NVIDIA GTX 970 [DX11] (which is still in our to be supported range).

We use 2022.3.6 (latest .10 also has the issue) with HDRP 14.0.8.

Here is a video showing the issue. Sorry for the bad quality:

Initially I thought the reflection probe itself is corrupted, but you can see in the screenshot that its content seems fine.

If I disable it though the strange colors don’t happen. I then found out, that reducing the light intensity value from 17.8xx Lumen to ~14.000 (there is specific threshold) gets rid of the issue in that very specific case, BUT if I move the reflection probe again near to another light (with a quite high value) then it happens again.

The thing is: I have NO clue what is going on. Right now it FEELS like some sort of “light intensity” too high value overflow that just happens on certain graphics cards. But dunno, it doesn’t make sense?

I did not file a bug report yet, because in our experience it takes about 6 months to get a bug fixed (and we don’t have that time). This one is a nasty one, because it just occur on special hardware, so that will lengthen the bug process I guess.

So what I search is advice what this could be and if anyone has an idea how to fix this (without changing the light values of the whole game, because we need the visuals to remain). Or did anyone else see such strange behavior? Or is anyone of Unity aware of this and a fix is in the making?

Best,
Bennet

Working on a minimum repro project.

Still would love to know if anyone has a thought on this.

Never seen that. It’s great that you’ve made a minimum repro project, a bug report with the project and the machine specifications will definitively help us a lot!
