High Level Multiplayer Networking Question

I currently have a single player game and want to add 2 player co-op.

I’ve read and fooled around with the Unity networking components in a separate project and get the gist of how it works.

My question is…

  1. Should I take my current prefabs from my single player, add the networking components for co-op and use the same prefabs for single player with the networking components disabled…and only enable them in a co-op game?

OR

  1. Should I duplicate all of my prefabs (that need networking) and add the networking components and make a duplicate scene to place them in?

I would think that option 1 would be best, so I don’t have to duplicate the whole scene (which would duplicate maintenance).

Any help would be appreciated as I just want to make sure I’m not sure what best practices are and just want to make sure I make things as cleanly as possible.

Note: I’m working on a VR title and could potentially have 100’s of items that can be picked up and examined in one scene.

As a general rule never duplicate anything.

So option #1. For single player use all the same networked objects & scripts… but just run it as a host.

This also allows you to be running as single player and have a 2nd player join in later without having to restart the game.
