High-performance designer-centric GUI system in Unity 3.5

Hi all,

Has anyone seen the live demo of Unity3.5? Any insights on what this GUI system will provide?

Thanks!

Stephane

Mention of it was actually excluded from the keynote and no demos of it as well. It was mentioned briefly at the end of the Editor Scripting talk but that was only to say that “editor scripts will be written differently.”. I suspect it won’t make it to 3.5. Literally everything else on the list BUT that was mentioned and the major pieces (except the SVN/Perforce editors) had convincing and sweet demos.

Hmmm ok thanks for the heads up. I was looking forward to getting this geatute but i guess i ll have to wait another 6 more months easily

Or you could only hope that they have some amazing trick up their sleeves they’re keeping secret?

I hope so… I feel like some of my clients are starting to lose interest in Unity because it takes so much time to make super slick UI’s. To survive another year without the ability to make UI’s as reasonably as well and easy as you can in flash is going to be quite the burden.

If true, that would be a major disappointment for a lot of people, myself included. Part of the reason I bought the 3.x update was because of the promise of a new GUI system. Had we been told that it wasn’t going to be in the 3.x release cycle, then some of us might not have bought the upgrade.

I talked to some guy at the booths at Unite who was demonstrating angry bots running on an iPad 2 with a plugin allowing it to use a flash UI. The product he said was called Scaleform… Scaleform.com/unity

there was no promise of a new gui, just a stated possibility

From what I understood scaleform came to unity asking to do some official integration of scaleform into unity, like beast is integrated, but unity declined. For whatever reason. But I assume the reason is because they don’t want Unity to be dependent on flash to make UI’s and I would hope that instead Unity is making some kind of UI system that can be comparable to flash and scaleform, because it really needs to in order to compete. I think a flash/scaleform like UI solution integrated into unity directly would be vastly superior to actually using flash and scaleform because it would all be in Unity and probably much more fluent to work with. Sort of like what they did with the tree creator. The industry standard that UDK uses is speedtree I think, but unity just made their own integrated tree creator.

There is a video on Youtube with a Autodesk Scaleform presentation showing demos and the basic workflow for using Flash GUIs in Unity.

I don’t have any links handy, but it was implied many times that it was going to be included in 3.x. I’m sure they also included some disclaimer as well, but considering how many UT man hours that were spent on things people didn’t ask for it would be a major disappointment if they didn’t deliver at least some of those things we did ask for. If I were using the free version of the engine my attitude might be different and I probably would have picked up EZGUI by now. But the one area where Unity is weakest is its GUI system and it’s been that way for a long time. It’s really a black eye on a otherwise very efficient development tool.

The new GUI is mentioned in the Unity press release as being included in 3.5.

A reply in the Unity blog says it was not shown in the presentation as it is not yet as polished as the features they did show (7th reply).

Phew, thank god. Thanks Moonjump

Any news about this? I have not seen ANYTHING nor ANY COMMENT from Unity about this. Since this is the most important feature I am looking forward to evaluate, there is a sense of emergency in providing details about this GUI system.

Do you guys agree? Unity folks, can you say something?

Stephane

I suppose that you’re right guys, but why waste time waiting for the “official” GUI support when you have tools like EZGUI or UIToolKit?

EZGui: Can t make a decent scroll list
UIToolkit: I am new to it

I am not fair to EZGUI. This is a great package unfortunately, I can find a way to use it proprely

If you find EZGUI a “crappy” package, then don’t waste your time with UIToolKit, it’s even worst

Can indeed make a very decent scroll list.

I’ll second John B here in saying that EZGui definitely can make great scroll lists (and quickly, at that), once you take some time to learn the basics.

As for as the 3.5 GUI stuff, haven’t really heard anything, and they didn’t really mention it at Unite.

the only thing really known on the 3.5 gui is that it might very well not make it into 3.5 at all
