I just officially launched my game Hip Ship on the dimeRocker Arcade. I created it mostly over the past few weekends.
It was originally a single level demo I made for showing off features of the dimeRocker Arcade. I had only a few hours to create the demo, so that’s primarily why you might notice the assets come from the 2D gameplay tutorial.
Anyway, it was cool to be able to create a small game like this using a free tool and assets. And the simplicity of the Arcade is very inspiring for me to make more small games on my spare time.
Check it out and let me know what you think. It may be a bit choppy for some people, I will be releasing a performance update soon.
I just uploaded Hip Ship to Kongregate and integrated their high score API. I’m still looking into how to use their achievement system, but for now it’s there to play. Have fun!
I created a video showing a complete play-through of the game in its current state. And I wrote up some development notes about my future plans with it based on feedback and analytics.
Whenever I see small platformer games like these I always think of the possibilites. As one guy from Vancouver to another. I’m saying this: platformers are unique but can be even more unique, you could make this a TPS Open World game and when chases occur and stuff you get into the Hip Ship and do your thing. My suggestion is keep working on it until you get to an open world mark at least. Because I would like to see this game go that direction because of it’s potential.
I completely agree. I have some pretty awesome ideas for new mechanics, some of them I already created and just haven’t put in yet. I really need to make it so you can play individual levels.
If I do that, I don’t even care if anyone plays the game or not. It would be a great sandbox for me to experiment with new ideas. And I agree that opening it up more would be fantastic. I think putting in a level editor is a great first step.
Okay after you implement those mechanics I have an idea. You add a player character and it’s a chase, you go in a chase and then you enter the Hip Ship and then the Hip Ship levels start.
No, not all platformers aspire to be open world games. Only ones with the potential. Like this one game I saw on the forums it aspired to become a game where you go around a little temple. But games like this can become open world games. But the first thing to do is give it a 3D effect and not see it as a sidescroller and rather see the back of the ship and control it as it moves to avoid the objects and in the options menu choose if you want it to be a sidescroller or 3d way.
