Holiday Release?

Can anyone chime in their opinion or experiences with holiday releases? I’ve nearly finished a mobile game, and I ‘plan’ to do advertising, but most advert companies are bogged down or closed right now for the holidays.

Do you think an unadvertised game would get lost amongst the clutter of other holiday releases, press coverage, and main-stream products? Should I wait a month and spend time brushing it up, or push it out the door for the holiday? I didn’t specifically ‘target’ a holiday release, it just happens that the product is nearly completed right now.

I can’t help but imagine 100s of people smiling at their new smartphone on xmas and then hopping on the marketplace and grabbing a handful of whatever cool apps they find, and likely on mom and dad’s buck.

Personally, I’m leaning toward taking my time and hopefully I’ll catch the tail end of the “i got a new phone!” crowd.

Depends a lot on the game an platform. I know you say it’s for mobile, but if it’s iOS then you will have to wait until after the 29th anyway since the appstore is closed for developers until then.

It will always be tough to not get lost in the masses of other games out there, whether you have marketing or not. If you can can’t wait and decide to do some self marketing make sure you plan it very carefully to get yourself the best results you can. Since it’s not a holiday-targeted game though, I would probably brush it up or work on some pre-marketing plans.
