Home Developers: What's you set up?

Just wondering what other home developers set ups are like. Do you have an office space, do you use a different PC for dev?

well, i have a couch, two laptops, a broken mouse(cause the couch is not wide enough so it falls on the ground sometimes) and a tablet.

(I am a hobby game dev )

Dedicated space in the home for working.
I’m hoping to expand soon so will want to move to a bigger house, but still work from home as office space is really quite expensive.

small office available, mums house and my house. Mums house is really fantastic for game dev because you get endless cups of tea, food and a fuss made of you. You’re never too old.

… I don’t put a feet in mums house hmm, since 2+ years ago.
I don’t know, I go there only on holidays and while I don’t finish a game I am never on holidays rofl.

Make up with mum, I spent a decade away from her. I regret it

Agreed. Mine was killed :frowning:

My setup includes a crappy computer on the other side of the living room with my fiance and anywhere from 1 to 4 kids running around… not the most productive environment. I have a lot of late, blissfully quiet nights at my desk.

Not so hot for keeping a healthy relationship with partner and kids if you lock yourself away like that late at night. I figure it’s one of the biggest driving points of my failed relationships in the past.

It certainly is not. My fiance is very understanding and supportive though. She sleeps on the couch a lot (despite me trying to send her to bed).

I also cook dinner a lot. It helps

I always tell people - if you are an indie that wants to succeed as an indie you either need total belief in the project or to work crazy hard so you make it before your relationship self destructs

That means forum is not essential and a waste of time! :open_mouth:

It kinds of funny how that works out…ahem.

Her: What’re doing in there?
Him: I’m streaming porn.
Her: Ha, yeah right - don’t forget to come to bed.

Her: What’re doing in there?
Him: I’m gambling away the kids’ college fund at an online poker site.
Her: Ha, yeah right - don’t forget to come to bed.

Her: What’re doing in there?
Him: I’m having video sex on Skype with your sister.
Her: Ha, yeah right - don’t forget to come to bed.

And then…

Her: What’re doing in there?
Him: I’m creating the database backend for the co-op web game I’ve been working on.
Her: Bullshit, you’re having an affair with my sister while streaming porn and gambling the kids’ college fund away - you bastard!

lol

Huzzah, my humble abode. I have a sneaky graphics tablet hiding under there.

Im going to chop off that top desk and center everything on the main bottom bit instead (its a lot wider than the photo) and also re-tape it white with these sheets of weird tape stuff. Going to get some whiteboard paint for my walls so I can write on them and stuff  will be sweet.

I wanted a floating desk, but my walls are hollow and it would just fall :frowning:

Charlie, good stuff, but looks like an ergonomic nightmare (but you already know that!)- Good thing you’re young or you’ll have neck pain and headaches. I used to think ergonomics was baloney, until I had everything setup at my office correctly.

Me - I have a regular office with all the regular stuff. But at home, i have a study dedicated to development. I leave the door open so my family can come hang around if they want, a lot of times we collaborate on development and design issues, it’s quite fun.

Yeah Jaimi I do get headaches, its the reason im currently sorting out my room. Get everything nicely polished and comfortable. my desk is at a perfect height, just the monitor is too high on that upper shelf.

My home-office is a former bedroom. The main one is with the two screens. The second one is for building iOS, rendering (3 render machines), server. I just started working at Aventurine (Greek company), so I have another office now too…

It’s kind of sad looking at my current setup. A single tower connected to a pair of widescreens (a 1440x900 19" and a 1280x720 17") with my crappy ol’ Eee PC 7" netbook sitting there doing little more than streaming music. A couple of years back, it would have been a pair of towers w/KVM to the same ol’ 19", the MacBook, the netbook, and the wirerack with a domain controller - database server - IIS server - and redundant file servers. That was a couple of years ago though…meh. Now it’s VMs because I can’t afford the hardware.

No pix of anything - definitely no pix of this crappy lil’ desk. I looked if I had any previous pix of stuff, but the only thing I could find was my cube from my last office gig. I’m going to post them here, because they kind of touch on setups - but also for a couple of other reasons from other threads: paper, paper, paper from the paper thread and yes, that’s a Rockstar Sugar Free energy drink…lol.

Overhead drawers full of books and software. Drawers full of hard copies of code, memos, all that corporate fun…and er…moar energy drinks!

Paper, paper, paper…highlighters, post it notes, and a few of the machines I had (had over 30, including boxes in the server room, both data centers, as well as the VMware stuff). I kind of miss that job…meh.

There’s my Rockstar Sugar Free! And there’s that pesky light telling me that I have voicemail…if it was important, they would have sent an email. Cause even if I was out smoking with a handful of code, the Blackberry would have still chirped…meh. Yeah, I kind of miss that job - mix of programmer analyst and system administrator. They definitely didn’t pay enough though…bah.

So I look from that to my machine here…sure, it’s more powerful than any of those machines - but that’s a lot closer to what my home setup used to be like. Replace the notebook with the MacBook, replace the SFF with a pair of towers under the desk, put the monitor on the right, replace the phone with the netbook and put that on the left, and replace the SFFs/tower with towers and drop them on a wirerack.

Oh well, need to walk to the store for some diet Mountain Dew…

My setup…

Hahaha just joking
Although wouldn’t mind a setup like this one day…

My main workstation:

When I want to relax while working (this has been my setup for the entirety of Ludum Dare):

How about this, eh?
