How about a Android subforum?

I have thousands of questions for Android development, but I’m not sure, if the Iphone crowd would mind, if I cluster up their subforum. I know we are still in beta, but there have to be some questions on everyone’s mind.

For example, I want to know, if there is any way to have something like Iphone remote 2 through the Android debug bridge, I could really need it now.

Hmm, I gues I am the only one that wants to develop on Android first and then port it to Iphone.
I know I don’t need to pluck down another couple grands to get a Mac + Iphone + License to finetune touch and tilt mechanics, but I’m honestly at a loss on how to do it without compiling it after each change.

im not sure if this would help, but i know there is an iphone app (maybe for andriod too) that allows you to test what is in the editor on the phone without having to compile it

again not sure how it works, but this might help?

I support an Android forum, too !

Or maybe merge iPhone forums into Mobile forums ?

Yes, please let’s have an Android forum!

there will surely be one once android is released.

currently with the alpha and a handfull of licensees it does not make any sense to have a dedicated board.
The 3 threads on android where one is the massive announcement threads kind of indicates that too.

also as it is not released at the moment I’m not even sure about the license and NDA to which it is bound

As far as I know we are allowed to talk about it in the forums and since everyone can get the beta now within 24hrs of ordering, I don’t see a reason to wait any longer.
When we have a Android subforum, there’ll be enough topics soon.

Its in alpha and only available as pro

That are 2 reasons why there is little use for it …
the nexus one are still offered → less than 500 android licenses sold so far
does not really justify an own board

and having the board only means that android spam bots will visit the board, if users were interested to post more it would have happened anyway.

You want it, you got it, look forward to a bunch of Android posts in the Iphone section in the coming weeks.

And it is in beta, that’s why the current version is called beta 5.

posting it in the totally wrong place does not make the request more valid, only shows why android users don’t deserve a place different from the webplayer devs :stuck_out_tongue:

How is it the wrong place, when it is the only place to ask for touch and accelerometer related questions?

As someone else said, a general smartphone place could also work.

because with unity 3, accelerometer etc are part of input, not part of xxxInput → general topic  (there is also no android for Unity prior 3 unlike the iphone)

also, the android is as far away from the iphone as just possible.
With “random availability of multitouch”, its “random availability of the compensation stick” etc the answers you would get from iphone users wouldn’t be of much use, after all, the iphone had a working multitouch hw 3 years ago, not 6 months ago

See, that’s why we need a Android board, I’m pretty sure you haven’t even checked out Android properly.

I’m not interested in developing for devices without multitouch and I won’t target Android devices, that don’t have it, which is just the Xperia X10 from all the 2.0 devices. If you are referencing the multitouch implementation from HTC, it is easily fixable by not having them on the same height. Supporting alternate controls is easy as pie, I didn’t even think about it, when I compiled my first test and BAM, full Trackball and D-Pad support was preconfigured and worked like a charm.

We haven’t decided yet about a separate Android section. Most of the scripting between iPhone and Android is fairly similar so mixing the two would be beneficial to people developing for either platform. I also see a lot of discussion in the iPhone section that is general enough to be helpful to all Unity users so fragmenting it even further seems a bit odd.

On the other hand, there are of course Android specific issues that will arise and expecting everyone to properly prefix their threads with “[Android] build issues” or similar is unrealistic so making a specific section might be necessary.

Anyway, we’re still up in the air about this, but until the final version of Unity Android is officially released we’re going to keep it as is.

rofl, I also am expecting a ‘Android’ forum because, as a beta tester, I too have many questions regarding unity-android!

Some people moan whenever Android is mentioned in a thread on the iPhone forums, but it would be a good place to discuss Android until it is decided if it requires a separate forum.

Maybe the lack of a natural place to post, rather than lack of demand is the reason for so few posts about the subject.

Perhaps either add “(Android too)” to the iPhone forum title, or have a sticky thread saying to use the iPhone forums for Android discussions.

Not even remotely, as the android is as close to the iphone as it is to osx or linux if not even closer, as it is desktop + perhaps multitouch.
The technical incapabilities and differences on the android platform push it totally out of the iphone topic (like plugins → nope, multitouch → perhaps, …)

Would make more sense to put them into the general board with these tags as the android is no iphone yet its a unity platform.
on the iphone board it will confuse all as the android is just too different and various things do not remotely apply to it that hold for the iphone and vice versa.
I definitely do NOT want to see android stuff there at all as an iphone Pro licensee and I won’t have a problem ensuring that they rethink the idea to ever spam the iphone board with android specific topics through answers that apply to the board but not their platform.
Its enough of a mess as it is right now due to Unity iPhone 1.7, Unity 3, OS3, OS4, ipad - iphone- iphone 4

Most sense at the time as it is in alpha from what stated is if UT would just add all android pro preorderers to a closed testing group away from here.

The problem with that is for people like me who are sticking to iPhone, but want to keep an eye on Android.
