how can i assign a material to a 3d model?

I would like know how to assign a material in unity 3D.I have a Color pallete with six colors and i need set material to a object(imported from 3dS Max)..thanks

In most cases it's as simple as dragging the material onto the shape in the editor view or by dragging the material on to the materials tab in the hierarchy window. You then put the shape in a prefab to save your setup
