How can I retrieve a scene I was working on if it is not among the assets?

First, check in the recycle box in case you deleted it. If so, perhaps it is recoverable.

Second, as with ALL computer work, if you value the time put into the project, always take steps to protect it.

Please consider using source control in order to guard and protect your hard-earned work.

Personally I use git because it is free and there are tons of tutorials out there to help you set it up.
