How do I make my objects leave a trail?

Like footprints.

I have a number of objects that look like diamonds. Wait… I’ve got a pic.

See. Okay. So there’s a bunch of these and they run around. I was thinking it’d be awesome if they did left a trail as they moved around. This seems rather similar to footprints. Except footprints could just be planes that are dropped, and this needs to be a constant trail. Not sure how to do this.

The only solution I’ve come up with is putting a transparent texture across the entire ground plane, and drawing on the texture with Texture2D.SetPixel. But then I’d need a MASSIVE texture across the whole world, wouldn’t I? And every platform would need its own texture… the whole thing seems like a pain. Any thoughts?
