So in Skyrim you could be looking at a mountain far off in the distance and it will seem huge and very far away, then when you begin going towards it you notice you are closing in on it pretty fast, then it takes you like 30 seconds to get on top of it, and from the top you realize just how tiny this supposed giant mountain really is.
How does Skyrim and other video games I’ve seen create the illusion that objects in the distance are further away and bigger than they really are up close?
One thing they are doing is a “Depth of Field” effect - it sort-of blurs out details and desaturates colors on things that are far away. And the closer you are to the object, the less DoF there is, so it slowly gets sharper/more colorful.
Used in film and often games (not sure about skyrim) nice effect where as you change the field of view (e.g. zoom out) you move (dolly) the camera closer.
