I use the free old version of unity. Not 3.1 or 3.0.
But I would really like to put some videos into the game, and when a charter walks up to the screen and pushes “P” or something it will play. Is this possible?

Only Unity Pro supports video playback (IINM), although I have read about people creating the effect of video playback by displaying multiple successive texture images in sequence.
Also, note that just because you’re using the free version doesn’t mean you can’t upgrade to the latest version of Unity (which I’d recommend doing).

No, the free version is time unlimited (its no trial)

New editor functionality basically, more modern versions of FBX and more supported programs to get your assets in.
Also basic Beast lightmapping and naturally surface shaders.
But technically U3 does not give free users any additional feature from the U2 Pro so no VCS, no Render Texture, no Shadows, no PostFX, no Asset Bundles, …
