Not only lower the pitch (don´t go extreme with it) but also add a lowpass filter to it. Experiment with the filters frequency until it feels right, slope should be quite easy, 6 or 12dB per octave.

Filtering the high frequencies out be perfect, I wouldn’t pereonally lower the pitch.
How about a delay in the sound reaching your ears? And perhaps a little echo to make it sound huge?
