How do use use Transparency maps and normal maps?

I have models with many maps. works fine, except for trying to apply a trans map to one section. I can find no where to put it that works. And unlike diffuse maps, they are not auto placed by the importer.

Same issue with normal (NOT bump) maps. Does this take a custom shader to utilize?

Thanks,
David

you need to use the correct shader.

there are shaders with transparency as well as shaders with normal maps.

unsure if combinations with both exists.

just click the dropdown menu in your material to see the available shaders

I did mot find any that use normal maps, nor any where I could apply the trans map and have it work. I’m still trying to find info on the standard shaders.

shader to use with normal map in unity are the one called
“bumped”

So bumped diffuse , bumped specular, then you have in “transparent” section of drop down list of shader also transparent >> bumped diffuse, bumped specular etc…

it’s writed “bumped” but this is actually what work with normal map

When I put a normal map (rgb normal directions) into a bump texture, I just get odd distortions of the model, not the appearance of the original hi res model that it was taken from. It does not seem to use it correctly as a normal map. Maps are from 3ds Max 2010.

is the model correct (especially its normals) and is there a pixel light shinning on them?

also is the uv map correct for the normal map? (its the same as the diffuse uv set)

Possibly one or more of the RGB channels is inverted.

If the map looks correct in Max, as Eric5h5 says, try flipping the Y channel of your normal map. To do this just invert the Green channel in Photoshop or some other app that allows you to access and edit the RGB channels of an image.
