I just purchased a new second hand computer and whilst I can install Unity 4.5.5 I cannot get the free 30 day trial version.
It says to enter a serial number that was sent…but I never received anything.
All I can do is use the free version.
Have Unity discontinued the free trial version?
I have contacted both support and sales but have had no reply to my query.
Support told me to contact Sales which I did but no joy there.
They are just running me around in circles.
What could I be doing wrong?
My computer is going ok.
Someone found a folder in it (hidden file) with a Unity name.
Could that be doing it?
I tried deleting the folder and reinstalling Unity but still the 30 day free trial option is greyed out?
Can anyone please help me?
Where I live in Australia we only have adsl1 and dial up.
I have to get my friend to download stuff that’s bigger than about 200megabytes or it takes all day.
He’s already downloaded Unity for me twice now and doesn’t know why the trial version s/n is not given.
Thanks
!
It means that there’s a piece of string, that goes from unity hq, and it leads into your computer, and that piece of string is securely tied to your email.
I am kidding. What I mean is that it may be the trial is up on the email you registered with.
I have not had a trial of anything?
This is my first venture and it’s turning out horrible!.
I haven’t got cable or fast internet and must use either a Cafe or a friends web.
I can’t buy much at the Asett store because I can’t download to my computer with any reliability.
By the looks of it I have to lug my computer to the Cafe in order to purchase anything as you can only download it to Unity !!!
That makes me so mad and the fact I cannot get a serial number to try out Unity Pro is pathetic.
I think I’ll go to another engine that’s friendlier.
At least you answered me, Hippocoder.
I thank you for that.
I’ve had no help whatsoever from Unity !!
OK try to register a new account under a new email address, perhaps this will resolve the problem for you. From what I can guess, the computer has previously had Unity installed and the trial is up. You can try these steps: License information is invalid - Questions & Answers - Unity Discussions
Ok thanks, hippocoder
I might try that. I’ll have to wait until I can get to the internet cafe again as I can’t download it from my place.
It would take 37 hours to do that.
And then once installed again I have no real faith that I’ll get any further.
There apparently is no such folder or file in the directory that is mentioned anyway.
It must be because I download on one type of compter and install it on mine???
Could that be it?? You would think that there must be a way to overcome this?
The free version works Ok by the way.
The support people at Unity tell me to contact Sales. The Sales people tell me they can’t help and to contact Support at the same address you gave. A recursive problem indeed.
I think from memory I’ve sent nearly twenty requests for help in this matter.
I have very little confidence in Unity “Support” now.
You are my only help. The only one who cares to reply and I thank you!
Just as a note.
Do we Dial-up and slow internet users have another choice about downloading Asset Store files?
We cannot reliably download from home any files larger than about 50 to 100 megabytes at the most because of either time or drop outs.
Is it at all possible to go to an internet Cafe…download the Asset Store file on a USB drive…come back home…install and license it from home?
Or must we always have to directly load it into the computer which is rather impossible and impractical as well
Thanks, hippocoder for your replies and your work on my problem
Neil
So, if you launch Unity for the first time on a machine, it will ask to be activated. You should see a window like the following:
There are 3 options. If the machine where you are launching Unity has already had a 30-day trial then the 3rd option will be greyed out, in which case you’ll need to contact the Sales team (Patrick in your case) to explain why you want an additional trial.
It’s worth pointing out that it’s not a “free trial”. It’s a 30-day evaluation, which allows you to try Unity out prior to making a purchase. If you’ve no intention of making a Pro purchase, then the 30-day Pro evaluation isn’t really for you. As Ben said in his reply to you, if you contact Patrick, tell him about your company and team size, and the number of Pro licenses you will purchase if the trial confirms Unity is the product you need, then he’ll issue you a trial serial number.
There is no way that I am aware of that can enable a second Pro trial. The activation systems takes a fingerprint of the machine, and if that fingerprint exists on the license server, the trial request is denied.
(Oh, I took the screenshot from my Pro, usually it’s a light grey window.)
