How do you intend on hosting servers for your game if it goes mutliplayer?

Where do you go to do it and how?
What do you need?
I don’t have a game to host at the moment, but when I do, I want to know what to do.
What’s the difference between a PC and a server? Perhaps a server is more dedicated to what it does than a desktop? Could I run servers for my game on my computer, even if it was a really good one, or would it not be the same?

Maybe this is the wrong forum. Ah well.

Well basically a SERVER can be a PC, but a real server (Xeon 8 core) is much more powerful than a High End PC and can handle more people playing the game at once. If you want to host your own game, you gotta code the client for it, but it’s a difficult job since you need to think about optimisation and it’s quite large when completed (1-2 MB of code). If you want to host a game like Counter Strike, there are server kits and all youhave to do is have a good upload rate (DSL INTERNETZ), a solid amount of RAM (bout 8 gigs), A multi core CPU (something like i5 3570 is really nice). If your computer is not enough you can alw as rent a server too, and you can find some pretty good servers with 100 Mb down and up rate for 10-20 euros in europe and about the same amount of dollars in the US.It all depends on what game youre trying to host.

yikes maybe its better if a game is single player only

But a 100mb doesn’t sound alot to me?
What specifications does a decent server require?
By any chance, does the consumption of a game play a role in how much of the server is used.
Take minecraft for instance.
