Hi All,
How do game manufacturers make those cool painted style scenes ?
For reference: 55s into this video -
Do they paint the images with acrylic or water colour then scan them ? or are they drawn on PC ? and if so, what software do people use to do the drawing ?
Once you get the images, how do you overlay different effects and transition from one to the other ?
Any help appreciated.
Anthony.
This style is often called 2.5d animation. its layers of 2d images composited in 3d space, combined with panning, zooming and simple animations as well as subtle transformation movements create some compelling stuff. After effects is a really popular tool for this, although once unity’s timeline tool comes out(in combination with cinemachine) unity might be a good free alternative.
What you use for your source images is really up to you, Ive worked in translating old paintings into this style but for that particular short Im almost 100% positive that photoshop was used to paint it digitally. Think of it like having a photoshop file where your image is split into groups(foreground characters, midground, background, might have many layers in a group etc), combined with animation.
Another thing that often happens is that these cinematics are not created in engine, but rather with cinematic editing suites like After Effects. The resulting video file is then integrated into the game project for playback.
