How do you make a proper lightsaber / glowing cylinder that looks good from any angle?

I’d like to create a lightsaber / neon tube, i. e. a glowing object. I already tried several things, but none of them are good.

I searched and found suggestions like e. g. using a line renderer. But a line renderer looks depending on the angle like a flat ribbon.

Even the volumetric lights asset doesn’t work. For one it also looks like a flat ribbon:

And for the other the light is distorted at some point:

The suggestion with the bloom effect doesn’t work either. Unfortunately I get a “no more attachments allowed for this question” error now, so I can’t show. When you use bloom the light kind of moves / pulsates when you move the object. And besides of that you see severe aliasing of the object when you use bloom on it.
