how do you think iphone 4s "siri" works?

ive been checking out the latest iphone and a major feature of it was the assistant “siri” it seems to work realy well and i was pondering how they make it work, i recon it works by checking what you say like"hey do you like lasagna?" then it converts it to usable words like “hello do you like lasagna” then maby checks for keywords like"do you" that makes it a question then serches it in a database and then if it has the answer it says what it has stored like"no i dont" or if it dosent have a answer checks on alteritive sources. i dont own a iphone 4s so maby it dosent work with questions attall but i think it dose. anyway how do you recon it works?

Actually it doesn’t recognize a lot of things in french
But as it is connected to Apple servers, I guess it does use a parsing algorithm of its autogrowing database, like appstore’s Akinator used to.
So I’m pretty confident it will turn into something really, really impressive in some time.
Plus it’s founded by DARPA

:)what do you mean auto growing database dose this mean it learns from its mistakes that would be cool like if i asked it “the ingredients to choc chip cookies” and if it said “i dont know could you give me a recipe if you find one” then i could say “i found a recipe for choc chip cookies” then if it checked unnone questions and found that “choc chip cookies” was a match then i could save it and it updated the server then if someone asked “the ingredients to choc chip cookies” then it would tell them what i told it, i dont think it works like that but it would be cool if it did altho i could imagine what some people would teach it haha.

I believe Siri runs on FluffOS.

(joke…if you got it, kudos :))

It’s Iris back to front

http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/joyarchives/1604.html

That’s how.

More like this:

By auto growing DB I meant that every time you ask something, it’s sent to Apple. That is confirmed. What is not confirmed is why, but it’s kind of easy to guess :
The rate success (did Siri answered right ? if yes, after how many fails ?) would be sent too, and analyzed to refine the core engine. In short the more people use Siri, the better Siri gets at recognition.
I guess this is how Apple wants to make the next revolution. A human machine interface based on a social AI. That makes sense considering how they have an obsession for simplification and usability.

Apple can keep track of whats not understood and keep growing it until 10 years down the line, it’s the most advanced digital assistant ever made on earth.

Since they’ve started now, while it’s early, nobody’s gonna catch up. For good or bad (I don’t care).

Sure it must have made Google hella mad :stuck_out_tongue:

Just seen how cheap they are! 500pound. man, im buying one next week instead of a macbook. SIRI <3

  1. apple didn’t make it so why should google be hella mad
  2. in german and french siri is not much further than what google had for quite some time. difference is just that Googles is able to offer you step by step route calculation on the map replacing the nav software etc while siri has no environment knowledge at all outside the USA …

Siri is great if you happen to be a US customer, its good if you are able to limit yourself to what it offers but at least at the time its a gimick outside US + english that can not really set itself over the competition, even less due to the network bound aspect. they should finally start do field testing of their software with non us / non english users on a similar scale as they do it for their US puppies as they ask for more cash for the device over here than in the states and should offer an at least as solid product

naturally it will get better over time.

also did anyone realize that apple lies like hell?
Siri is not on iphone4 cause the cpu is not fast enough … even assuming that were right (which can’t be as the cpu has the same speed just a 2nd core so it would take at max 50-55% more for it on iphone4) that still leaves the question open on why the ipad2 didn’t get it which is 25% more powerfull than the iphone4s

Err… they haven’t started early - they’ve started late. Voice recognition on phones has been out for years - hell even this year Google put voice recognition on it’s search page! Dragon naturally speaking also had a mobile voice translation service etc.

IIRC Google has(or had) been providing free voice to text for some/all its YouTube videos.

I wish people would do a tad of research before claiming apples the first at something…

Thats not how the Apple Lemmings pattern works mate

If it would be, then it wouldn’t be required that Samsung + Google had to play that many strange games about the Galaxy Nexus finally reveiled last night just to prevent going down in the Apple Fanboy PR wave after the iPhone 4S presentation
Nothing to be done about there and no reason to start the same anti fanboysm. Tech is there to push us forward and the best you can do is be open about it even if you don’t think that apples artificial crippling to hell is an acceptable path to go just to sell the next overpriced slave device to 4M people within a weekend.

I should clarify - I’ve nothing against apple (I’d love to own it :P) - just the hyperbole that surrounds the company.

Very little to none of siri is actually created by apple

siri pretty much uses a bunch of search engines to return results, primarily Wolfram Alpha.

And the artifical intelligence to pick the best source is basically an extension of work done by the SRI International Artificial Intelligence Center (which is an offshoot of DARPA as was previously stated)

sorry wasn’t meant to be offending in case it sounded like it. The answer on that wasn’t against your posting but the general ‘anti apple fanboysm’ (yeah I know groups normally form best against a common enemy ;)) that threads like this spawn as you can see above already
I personally like the fact that apple added Siri. Not cause its good but it brings back competition hopefully as apple lacked on that end to laughability.

Now apple has to get the fact that them being a mix of Nintendo (getting people new to smartphones into the market, yet losing them after the generation cause they realize that iOS is lacking) and SAP (using artificial lock ins and locking anything else out to make switches painfull which iCloud is only going to make worse - the disable of google sync when you enable icloud contact snyc is a first sign of it) is not going to get them a loyal userbase. They will only serve as entrance drug to the smart phone market for MS and Google to grab the users away and they did in the past and will do so even more in the future.

Source? I don’t recall Apple saying a single thing about why it doesn’t run on the iPhone 4. What I do recall is that Siri was developed along the iPhone 4S. Besides that, Siri is still in beta. And besides that, the iPad has never even had voice control.

But other than that, sure, Apple lies like hell.

False. Google takes voice commands - Siri accepts natural language commands. Not even a comparison here. And that’s not to mention timed reminders, location based reminders, and general QA awesomeness.

Ok, so can you explain why Apple is mopping the floor with MS and Google in customer satisfaction surveys?

If by ‘artificial crippling’, you mean ‘no battery sucking resource hog flash, no malware, no useless hardware, no vaporware’, sure, iOS is artificially crippled, and I’m drinking the kool-aid. More please!

This kind of name-calling and general disregard for Apple proponents without any substantial arguments pervades Android-Apple debates - if you want to make a point without any evidence to support it, just call your opponents Apple fanboys. Argument won.

For the same reason Battlefield 16: Revenge of the Dead Zombie Nazi Terrorists will outperform 99% of the video games out.

People are f**king retarded.

OMFG APPLE ARE THE 1337!

Oh wait:

New in version 3.0 of Dragon NaturallySpeaking are natural language commands for Microsoft Word 97…

That was a 2 second google BTW.

And don’t even get me started on a claim as stupid as ‘timed reminders’.

Not at all - I’m behind you. I just wanted to use the occasion for clarification.

That said this post may contain inflammatory comments/sarcasm.
