How does Beast lightmapper determine the number of lightmaps it generates?

Is it related to the number of materials used in the scene, or separate meshes? Something else entirely? Any help would be apprectiated.

Also when baking my scene the maps generated seem to have a lot of wasted space…

It seems that it’s a combination of the Bake Resolution and the Scale in Lightmap settings that you need to tweak to determine how many maps are produced. I’ve got my scene down to ~5 maps from ~35 by playing with these settings. Now just to crack that elusive max distance on Ambient Occlusion…
