Periodically, the UT employees round up a number of forum members (usually about 10 or so), and throw them into a deep pit. The forum members must then fight to the death in this pit. Whoever is last to survive becomes a moderator.
Most of the moderators are UT employees. There are a few other people with mod status, but they have been granted this for one-off reasons related to something they were doing for the community. We don’t have any scheme for members of the community to become mods, but we will always consider new ideas. Would a scheme like this be of interest to anyone?
A good moderator doesn’t really want to be a moderator, he just wished everyone behaved on its own, so the forum is in peace. It’s a lot of work to keep a forum friendly and nice.
So people who asks to be a moderator usually just want to feel da powa They usually go through a lot of trouble postulating and asking everyone to vote for them, so they can later on be assholes about it, and abuse their power.
I like the moderators here, they don’t bully the users by closing threads just because they’re getting a little too long, or there are already one or two of the same topic somewhere so you should have searched before posting.
EDIT:
I mean, I never understood that, unless there’s so many that it’s spam, what’s wrong if there’s a couple of threads with the same topic, sometimes its even a good thing to start a discussion on a fresh start, there’s no need to close it. And if the thread’s getting too long or going out of topic, is that such a bad thing they have to close the thread? That’s just abuse of power, man. Bad mods just LOVE to use their power, they’re just waiting for it, i hate that. You know you have a good moderator when sometimes he or she don’t even seem to be around, but they’re watching constantly, and when there’s trouble, they come to save us all and destroy the bad guys with lasers, hell yeah. That’s very unlike people who became mods just so they feel a bit of power in their lives, constantly warning threating everyone to ‘behave’.
