It ranges from not very hard to extremely hard, depending on what you want it to do.

walk around, play animations, detect if an enemy is in its viewport, a really stupid aimbot.
Very easy to do that, 50-150 lines would probably be enough.
I hate instant AI… what’s instant AI? well, certain condition is met and the character instantly performs the corresponding action. For example, you enter a room with an enemy, and enemy instantly spots you and starts attacking, it doesn’t feel realistic.
There should be different phases, first make it spend a second recognizing what he’s looking, then give him some sort of reaction to what he just saw, and maybe then start the corresponding action, which might be attacking or whatever.
How about the enemy, who has heard a raging battle grow ever closer for the past 10 minutes, already has his weapon trained on the doorway and smokes you the moment you step in to it?
On the original question, in my opinion AI is likely to be one of the harder parts of your game, unless you’re going for really oldschool gameplay or a game style that only requires basic AI.
The main reason, is that you pretty much have to do it yourself. It will ask a lot of questions about how you structured the rest of your game. And you have to get your hands dirty with code. You can get away with skimping on code in many areas in Unity - but you have to bite the bullet with AI.
AI is not really hard just time consuming. It is really enjoyable, if you like a challenge.
Alot of it is not really about Intellegence but smoke and mirrors, it looks good to the player but when you see the code its really simple most of the time.
Well, the AI in CSS looks almost realistic. As if a player was actually playing. It would stay in packs, split up, watch each others backs, figure out where the spawn points are, take cover (not just because of low health).
its rather amazing.
Lol! You know that’s hardly the explanation for their instant reactions.
And it doesn’t work for stealth games’ AI! You know it’s like I say… they go from playing idle animation to shooting you and activating alarm simultaneously, all in zero time.
Yeah, In CSS, if an enemy is in the viewport, it will aim the crosshairs slowly and shoot rather badly at the enemy. If it has a more accurate weapon, it goes for the head.
AI is a lot of fun to do, when you make it work. I love watching a character behave properly in different situations.

Once I create an AI, I’m going to give him a kid sense of humor. He would do stupid things like run into the battlefield just to tbag his victim, or run around knifing, try to noscope, and talk into the chat area.
how hard is it to… create your own AI?
depends do you want a grunt who runs at you shooting until he dies who has terrible aim and makes the same BS mistakes everytime and is only a challenge when there is like 100 of them because there aim isnt that bad that 100 of them cant kill you? and is your idea of increasing difficulty a soldier with the exact same AI except can take 3 grenades and 10 headshots without dieing who 1 shots you for 99999999 dmg? if so then you can program AI and different difficulty modes in less than an hour however…
if your idea of an AI is an AI who actively learns from your and its mistakes takes cover aims and shoots having like 19 different set play styles for each enemy type(theres a 1 out of 10 chance that this grunt will prefer this or use that or do this etc.) if your idea is an AI who gages “can i take this guy or should i call for backup” or an AI who trys to trap you and runs behind cover and heals or just plain flees completely or maybe just to get reinforcements when he’s low on health and he pursues you while calling for backup when you run and IF your idea of increased difficulty is an AI who’s someone SMARTER(not physically stronger but more intelligent) than the genius ive described up there then my friend THAT AI will take weeks to code but will be worth it in the end
i hope this long wall of text helped you with your delema
TL;DR: the smarter the AI the longer and harder the coding
