How large can the Unity executable file from a game get?

I try to find indie games from time to time on Itch.io and Game Jolt but I often come across viruses disguised as the executable game(mostly on Game Jolt).

Noticing that some of the viruses I saw were above 10 megabytes in size that got me curious if an Unity game’s executable can even get above 1Mb, I don’t have any big Unity games Installed so I’m not sure how it is for those, but from all the small/medium games I have seen their .exe are under 650Kb.

So are all unity games executables under 1Mb in size? or can they be larger?

trojan horse
sometimes its obvious and the antivirus just deletes it when I extract it.
60mb exe
^antivirus doesn’t say anything, but 60mb executable. is that possible?

(I’m sure there are viruses that are smaller than 1Mb out there too, So I’ll only open something if I’m 100% sure it’s a real game, regardless of file size :space_invader:)

I’m not sure how big they can be but viruses and malware have many methods of attack, so this may or may not be an indication of risk.

Probably if there are just some wannabe hackers then they may use obvious places like this executable, instead of more sophisticated ways of attack which I’m not going to expand upon.

I suggest using virustotal as it has a pool of a lot of different antiviruses and anti malware services to look upon.

I also believe that if a platform doesn’t manage to keep these malware files getting uploaded then probably you should not use it. They can’t catch everything, especially if is a new attack vector, but if the malware is known, they have no excuse

the website : virustotal (that i will not link here) might give you more info.

*You should also mind the “behaviour” tab over there (that might take time to generate, but you also need some prior info about how your OS works to understand that tab).

a rule of thumb is; if you even suspect something ; just a thought at the back of your head that something is fishy… is it really worth risking it?

A sidenote on malware; taking a risk of getting affected; is NOT YOUR CHOICE; you don’t have that choice even if its your machine that is at risk.
(If you have any social media account (Including online game stores) or if your PC is shared across a network; it will be used as a spreading vectors to others; and that is a privilege you do not have; to spread things to others unknowingly.
