How long did it took you to build your first game?

Two nights, but that was in 1986. I’ve sold the game as a listing to a magazine.
My current Unity Game is in development since march 2009. But I’ve released two other Games within that time.

My first game ever was a simple tic tac toe game that I hammered out in an afternoon in a teaching language called “WinOOT.” My first Unity game that I finished was a pong clone that I made in an afternoon. Other experimental gameplay concepts I’ve turned out in similar amounts of time.

As for bigger projects without the use of teams, I’ve yet to complete on my own. I have one I should be making a WIP thread for in a few weeks though.

I’ll probably do it in next 10 years

(if not taking the games i made up as a kid, which were obviously no videogames :P) then I think my first game was a study project called Kaju. Assignment was to use and adapt some existing game code for a tower defense game and make it our own  (it was also pretty funny to make it about godzilla and co, fighting against humans, in cute comic style, while everything is set up like really old and crappy stage sets, being able to see the actors inside costumes and such XD, sadly I couldn’t find any screenshots)

Haha, a Godzilla tower defense. I can only imagine it.

Sdclark79, yeah. I started on a game a few weeks, and I force myself to keep it simple and determine to finish it.

hardest thing imaginable isn’t it? - Sure is for me lol.

It starts off as some simple idea, then turns into some colossal wanna be AAA Title lol.

Beach Ball Blast, a take on Fruit Ninja with boats shooting beach balls, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, watermelon and dynamites on a beach. Took me 1 month in GameSalad, until I found out they didn’t have proper monetization for Android at the time. The website didn’t tell you that. I decided to not take shortcuts and relearn programming in Unity. Took me 3 months to rebuild.

I wouldn’t take myself so seriously with it is all, but it was the start of truely getting into game design as a real life decision. Any lessons learned needed to happen, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Using modular programming would be something I didn’t know about then. If I made it now… there would be no spaghettis.

3 years. Multiplayer and offline tank game supporting oculus too with all the modeling of environments and starting without having written a line in C#. 3 years of torture tho, putting a ridiculous amount of hours every day. Today I would have started an smaller project.

Without teamwork… Longer – create your own song, your own graphics, storyline, etc.
It’s not easy to create great game all by yourself. It will take 10-30 years to finish.
Depending the game platform 2-D game is quicker. 3-D game is longer…

Go ahead try it. It’s risky…

It took me about a month to finish my first Android game, I just released it to Google Play literally minutes ago, I’m unsure what to do with it next but I feel like it’s going to get buried deep in the app store.

Congratulations! It’s a good feeling. Just get it in the eyes wherever you can. Post in other developer forums and reddit where allowed, get as much feedback as possible from people with more experience and keep updating. I found back when I was promoting a mobile game to use Instagram, it’s fairly easy to attract people fast. Twitter would probably be better long tail promotion. Just talk to a lot of people. You’ll figure out your next move intuitively. Won’t be the same for everyone. Then make a better game when the time is right. Keep it up!

Hey Laabu19, Congrats mate. What is your name of your game? I probably check it out. Also particlemars, agree about have 1 man team verse 12 man team. It took me about a whole day to work on the game art. I couldn’t hack placeholder art

N1warhead, sure is. I still can’t stop myself adding 1 or 2 more features to the game … well probably 3 feature:smile:

Thanks Starling, the name of my game is Shape Popper, here’s the link:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Banboonees.ShapePopper

Being a programmer the biggest issues I had was art and music, the latter I got lucky with by finding someone on Newgrounds that was more than willing to work with me and provide music after seeing the gameplay. The art however I had to do myself and it was a struggle at first, but as I kept working on it until I got the hang of it. It’s not great art, but it’s functional for my first game.
